How can I max out this cr*p rig...

Hi guys,
I'm a total noob with an old machine that I need to get more mileage out of. Thing is I can't spend much money on it right now, but I'd like to bump up the performance (I run PhotoShop and Illustrator on it), so I can still use it effectively for a little while longer. I know if I go into my local Micro Center the sales guys will try to get me to buy all kinds of stuff that I may not need (usually inventory that they want to get rid of).

The rig (in my sig) needs new processor? More ram? Limited by my second rate mobo? Any advice and/or suggestions for purchase would be gratefully received.
Cheers!

Add more ram would be the best option, assuming you run xp 32bit os 2gig of ram with your apps. would give a marked improvement.

Thanks for the ram suggestion. Do you think I need a better CPU? I don't think my mobo supports newer processors, so it would have to be something that is a few generations old.
How about a slightly better video card?
Cheers!

Adding more RAM will definitely help. I'd suggest backing up your data, formatting your drive and doing a clean install of Windows XP and all the updates.

As for the processor, you're pretty much at the end of the roadmap for Pentium 4s.

A video card will not affect any performance unless you're playing games.

I second the previous suggestions. In addition, a newer, bigger hard drive will be faster than what you presently have, and will speed up opening programs and manipulating large files. I don't know if your board supports sata drives (which would be preferable), but among ide drives here is one possibility (among many) that would give you better speed, much bigger size, and just costs $73 if you are in the USA:

A faster HD that's even less expensive: WD 500GB 7200 RPM Black Series.

XJ -- I took a look at the mobo documentation at the MSI site, and as I suspected it doesn't support sata.

Oh snap - only an ICH4 controller on board - sorry Moonstruck. More RAM would be the biggest bang for the buck on that system.
