High cost:

X6800 Estimated ????
2 x 1 gig DDR2 1066 @ 5-5-5-15 Estimated ????
What Mobo???? Estimated ????
2 x 500 SATA II Hard Drives in RAID 0 Estimated $400
Zalman CU9500 $ 50
Creative x-Fi $100
High performance DX 10 Video Card Estimated $500
16X burner w/ Lightscribe $ 80

Almost as good but cheaper:

E???? Estimated ????
2 x 1 gig DDR2 1066 @ 5-5-5-15 Estimated ????
What Mobo???? Estimated ????
2 x 250 SATA II Hard Drives in RAID 0 Estimated $180
Zalman CU9500 $ 50
Creative x-Fi $100
High performance DX 10 Video Card Estimated $500
16X burner w/ Lightscribe $ 80
Did a little research:
Conroe E6700 2.67GHz/1066MHz 4MB Q3'06 $530
Conroe E6600 2.40GHz/1066MHz 4MB Q3'06 $316
Conroe E6400 2.13GHz/1066MHz 2MB Q3'06 $224
Conroe E6300 1.86GHz/1066MHz 2MB Q3'06 $183

E6600 seems to be the "sweet spot" for a great mid priced system

E6600 $316
2 x 1 gig DDR2 1066 @ 5-5-5-15 Estimated $250
Mobo???? Estimated $150
2 x 250 SATA II Hard Drives in RAID 0 Estimated $180
Zalman CU9500 $ 50
Creative x-Fi $100
High performance DX 10 Video Card Estimated $500
16X burner w/ Lightscribe $ 80

So----money wise----we are talking aprrox $1600 for a pretty darn good system

Over $2400 for a top of the line.....give or take Mobo/Crossfire/SLI/Size of RAID Array

And you may have a lot of the stuff already......

$316 is a VERY attractive price for a new CPU with as much punch as the E6600 seems to have.

Things are going to start getting FUN soon!!!

ram stuff

Hi everyone...I'm totally confused about RAM again these days.

I am looking at a Core2Dual 6600 and this mobo right now - the GA-965P-DQ6

should be out soon and looks nice. I don't want to wait for an Nvidia solution - heard too many nightmares about the Nforce boards and RAID/SATA drives etc on AMD platforms. And I have decided against SLI or Crossfire for this new computer. Just not that much of a performance freak.

So if I want to do a fair amount of overclocking, say 25% increase in FSB I should really look at nothing less than DDR2-800?

DDR2-400 is 1:1 ratio though isn't it?

Been a while...I have my P4PE running at 2.7ghz with DDR3200...beyond that I am clueless.

Core 2 runs on a FSB of 266MHz so you will need a minimum to run 1:1. I would look around the web and at XtremeSystems.org and see what people are getting as far as overclocks go. Micron has release some new chips that overclock very very nicely.

Here's a good guide for what ram to use with the Conroe, at what overclock you want...

thanks

Thanks, that's a really helpful thread.

I guess with stock cooling or my Zalman (the popular one with a blue LED, I forget the model) I am not going to need the DDR2-800...It'll be interesting to see what you can do on air. I did look at some of those posts on xtremesystems but overclocking is not my hobby, I just like to know I'll be able to overclock it 20-30% when the system starts to lag behind in 2 years.

My PIV 2.4c runs 2.9ghz in games no problem, not Prime95 stable though.

Intel Woodcrest: the Birth of a New King

http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=2793&p=1

"Conclusion

It took a few years, which is normal for any architecture redesign, but we feel Intel has finally created a product that is not just competitive to the AMD Opteron. Woodcrest outperforms all of the competition in 2-way configurations, and it does so with lower power consumption. This combination leads to better Performance/Watt in all tested situations. Woodcrest not only outperforms it's predecessor by over 100% in Performance/Watt, but it outperforms Opteron by as much as 60% in Performance/Watt. In terms of straight performance the Woodcrest led the way by anywhere from 18 to 35% at higher system loads. We feel that Intel has the vision to continue this trend, as they have a clear roadmap for next year and beyond. Expect to see even further gains in 2007. How those parts will compete with future AMD products is unknown, but we have competition and that is always good for the consumer."

Conroe's architectural relationship to this server chip is almost identical which is why I posted it in here.

AMD who?

Those results are impresive. Although Intel has always been KING since they have the majority market share of server CPU's. Although this KING title refers to performance. I love that last line of the article:
