Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

Hi All,

I have a P4c800-e which has worked for years. Currently it will not boot. Normally I leave this computer on 5 days a week. Last week I came to do some work and found it non-responsive. No signal to the monitor. So, I shut it down and rebooted. Still no signal to the monitor. Also, no post messages at startup. Uh oh, this starting to get serious. I pulled the memory to see if I would get beeps, and I did. Replaced the memory and replaced the video card. Still no change. I swapped out the cpu chip with another and got the same response. I hear the drives spin up, all fans powered up, mobo light comes on, but no signal to the monitor. I tried the monitor with another computer and it works just fine. When I power the unit on, normally I would hear the HD as the was being read, but now I hear nothing of the sort.
.
.
Any ideas??
also swapped out the battery with no change...

Thanks for the help in advance...

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

I recall a couple of similar-sounding problems being encountered by others in the past. Initial suspicion focused on the mobo, but it turned out to be the power supply in each case.

Regards,

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

That's what I thought except that everything spun up. Unfortunately I don't have a power supply to test the theory with. I'm going to try and borrow one from a friend (if he has one).

Yes, try swapping the PSU. The example Al is referring to was my daughter's P4P800D. And, it was an Antec TP430. New PSU and it's working just fine.

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

This has happened to more than a few of this, and the p4p800 as well..

I've done quite a bit of reading on it, and there seems to be no set "ruling" on what takes the boards out, or get's them back up.

Most seem to be related to the ICH5 chipset (southbridge) going bad. Usually after plugging in, or removing a USB device.

I spent about a week researching this, and it's amazing just how pervasive it really is..

Do yourself a fav. Don't drive yourself nutz trying to salvage it. It's gone.. Either replace with another one, which in itself is an adventure. his board still hold high value on ebay, or upgrade, and be prepared to REALLY shell out for almost EVERYTHING new...

I walked this path when my p4p800e-dlx fried the southbridge on a USB plug in, and came up with all the above info.
It's been replaced by a P4C800 E-dlx that someone I knew had and sold me. Otherwise, I'd be a no PC havin jamoke for awhile..

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

Had P4c800-e myself. Had the identical problem. Ended up frying southbridge as well. Never got to find out what was the exact problem. However, I strongly suspected the psu. I say his because it did not function properly when I attempted to use it on my new board. As a matter of fact I have three other Asus boards that have the same problem and consider it prudent not to "test" a new psu on them.

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

I would check vid card first if all else is coming up,
another thing to check would be cmos battery, had to change mine three or four years after initial build...similar probs ay the
time, battery is $3-4, CR2032@3V ,then go through bios again.

Re: Problem with my P4c800-e no startup

Wasnt this due to the chipset?; I thought Intel released an errata about it... dont quite recall now... I had an 8KNXP board die and it took my Sony Handycam with it (firewire board burned out which made the camera next to useless).
