| I am considering getting a C2Q to run at 400x8.5 (3.4). But, I don't want to have to run it much higher than stock voltage and would like to use the Intel retail HSF, if possible. Is this just wishful thinking? Newegg has the Q9550 for 270USD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041 Could I be reasonably sure that this CPU will do 400x8.5 at stock or only slightly higher voltage, preferably with the Intel retail HSF? Or, would I need to spend the extra money (352USD) on the Q9650 to be sure to reach that speed at stock voltage: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115130 I know there are no guarantees on overclock-ability, just looking for some input from those with experience. TIA.

| Re: Q9550 or Q9650 @ 400x8.5? You would have no trouble reaching 400FSB with those. Make sure the Q9550 is an E0 stepping, stock should be by now. Intel auto adjusts the voltage on the CPU. If you raise/lower the clock the CPU voltage follows. Mine is 1.09V at 2GHz and 1.23 at 3GHz. That is stock conditions. Anyway, you won't want to OC on the stock HSF. You can get a Dynatron 775 which looks just like a stock Intel HSF at NE. It's HS is built like the X6800 if you want the stock appearance and it is less than $20. |

| Re: Q9550 or Q9650 @ 400x8.5? Save the dough and go Q9550 and by a good cooler. The Q9550 I believe are all EO stepping now. I just came from a Q9550 and ran it 24/7 @ 4200mhz. The Q9650 from what I could see on the net, was not oc'ing any higher. The guy's with air cooling were all getting an easy 4gig oc with the Q9550 EO stepping.

| Re: Q9550 or Q9650 @ 400x8.5? Thanks guys. I'm not concerned about the "look" of the cooler, just would prefer to use the retail HSF, if I could. I'm a little uncomfortable with those giant aftermarket monsters hanging off the motherboard and any crazy mounting that may be required. Any other recommendations for a good quality HSF with a simple, solid mounting system at a fair price? One that doesn't require access to the back of the board to remove the HS? Is Zalman the one to go with? Which model? There seem to be so many different ones. S370 and S478 seemed so much easier... ![]()

Do you still have the Q9550 and if so, do you want to sell it?
