oh sorry...i was talking about MM, and thought he was talking about harddrives. nevermind. I think that it is a good method too.

snafu, if you use the XP-120 LMK, i'll send you a n orange yate loon. you'll laugh at the SilenX fans for the claimed 14dB

Finally got around to suspending mine in the 5¼ bays. Used to sound like turbine.. now I'd never know they were there

Was in the dollar store and found some 'sports' hair ties that worked perfectly. The ends were melted together instead of attached with metal clips and much beefier. Perfect.

Highly suggested. Read recently it's a good idea to ground the HDDs though. For those who haven't seen it.. here's a link

Thanks Nef I think that would be very cool to try out

I only have SilenX 80mm fans thermoresistor types for the case (special deal so I picked them up). I hacked them to remove the thermal control and added a fixed 37ohm resistor. With the fan controller they run fairly quiet on low but I can crank them up like hairdryers if needed

For the xp120 I have a Vantec Stealth fan I was going to use. I wanted to get a Panaflo as well but the one offered with the deal (ADPMods) had too high a load for the board (2amps I recall) and did not have the rpm monitoring (strange choice of fan for sure)

if your setup is anything up like mine, then XP120 with a nexus fan will be more than enough to cool your system. I would highly recommend that you put a fan at either the top front of your case or in the 5.25" drive bay panels. You can really feel how warm the air is.

Hey guys,
What say we change the title of this thread to The Canadian Thread?!

Now this rings a strong bell. I used to have the original board when it first came out but I can't remember what it looked like. I did check my two boards at home and they are the same.

I'm using the XP120 with a 120 high flow panaflo. Works good and it's quiet too. I am getting similar temps to you but my fans are well beyond 1000rpm. A very impressive set up on your part. I don't think I have the same case as you and Snafu so I can't easily reverse the airflow.

I tried this once and couldn't get it to work.

Do you have any pictures of this per chance? I would like to see how you did that.

Excellent idea! Can't believe I never thought of that. The only problem I see with it is there might not be enough airflow over the heatpipes unless you mount the fan differently.

I'm not sure a stealth fan will be enough depending on what you are doing of course. I tried an Antec thermal fan and it was terrible! I'm not sure why you can't monitor the Panaflos but I know you can't. They do have 3 wires but the speed just doesn't show up. Weird.

YOu would think that more people from the US would contribute to this thread as they are further south than we are. We only have to deal with temps for 1/2 the year. THe rest of the time we can just leave our PCs outside in the cold

Having the heatpipes vertical is kinda how the fridge works isn't it? except they kinda go in a loop instead of up and down?

One thing about the RPM wire. Did you have the ground wire on both the RPM and power? or just the power? I heard that you need to split the ground wire for the power and the sensor.

Still, following thread guys. At the moment ambient temp up to 30C. In spite of what i posted earlier my temps are now 49c cpu and 38c board. Up a few now that temperatures getting warmer. Yesterday ambient was 34c and the cpu remained at 49c. Work mate leaving for usa later today. Will bring me a Zalman and a swiftech. Any rapid recommend will be appreciated. Still do not think I will need water, once I improve on heatsnk. Also did not detect any change after over 100 hours after applying as5!!!??

Funny you should say this. My room is cooler in the summer due to AC and warmer in winter due to the fireplace. Wish I coudl toss it outside but the dang moose keep chewing on it

Might be but fridges work using a heat pump. Different from a heat pipe which uses convection (rise and fall due to density differences cause by temp)

I was thinking something similar to the SilverStone Nitrogen NT01 V2 Cooler that they brought out for their windtunnel case but have the pipes run upwards.

Uh-oh, Non-Canadian alert.
HAHA!! Just Kidding Tapir. Good to hear from you again!
An ambient temp of 34 degrees is unholy! Anything above 20 and I start losing my mind. I hate to say it but if you're using air cooling in that kind of heat there's only so much you can do. I'm not sure a Zalman or Swiftech will help much, but it will probably help a little.
With regards to the AS5, If I remember right it needs 7 or 8 heating up and cooling down cycles before it fully breaks in. Do you leave your computer on all the time, or do you switch it off at night? AS5 will only make at best a 2 degree difference.
By the way, thanks for the help with my Windows 98 shutdown problems. Much appreciated

We do get off easy temperature wise compared to them. Like I say anything over 20 degrees and I go nuts. Thanks God summer's only 2 months!
For the fan splicing I spliced 3 wires: 1-black, 1-red and 1-yellow. The yellow ran to the MB, the red and black to the fan controller. Everything worked except the rpm's didn't show up. Just don't know what the problem was.

I haven't seen that. Do you have a web link?

No Problem

Here's a link to Silverstone. There is a pic of their windtunnel case (TJ06) as well - similar to lian li where it uses an ATX board upside down. Thier heat sink is to fit inside the wind tunnel.

THe problem is that the RPM sensor needs a ground as well. try spliting your ground to the power and the rpm sensor. I believe that should clear things up.

Excellent link Snafu!
If I hadn't blown all my money on that EE proc I might have checked it out.
It would be interesting to see how it compared to the XP-120. Did you manage to get yours installed yet?
