Re: 500 Gb Seagate HDD with 32mb Buffer keeps on dying ! Even brand new replacements

You're welcome!

I don't think that DPP3510J.86A reflects the bios version. If you look further at the Intel links for bios downloads for that board, I think you will see that the bios version (for which the latest is 0517) is a suffix to that set of numbers and letters. If you enter the bios setup screens, you should be able to find the version listed somewhere. We can then check the Intel release notes to see if the descriptions of the subsequent updates seem relevant.

Yes, I think you should update it. You have bios 0413 dated March 6, 2008. Here are the bios release notes:

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1726...leaseNotes.pdf

You'll notice several fixes in subsequent releases involving slow boots or restarts. You'll notice in 0437 on page 3: "Fixed incorrect display of sata ports." Not sure exactly what that means, but it certainly sounds like it could be relevant.

Before updating the bios, though, I'd check the new drive on the other computer, to make sure it still works and that it is not producing the smell you mentioned.

There are several methods of updating the bios. See your user manual and the readme notes here: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1726...e%20Readme.pdf. I suggest NOT using any method that updates the bios from within Windows, because a crash could result in a dead board. Follow instructions very carefully, and don't do the update if it will be critical that the computer is available to you in the immediate future.

I've done bios updates many times. Digesting the instructions takes a lot longer than the actual procedure (which is a matter of minutes). I've never had any problems during these updates, but keep in mind that if something unforeseen goes wrong serious problems can result.

Good luck,
