| Hi bratsmaster and a big welcome to the forums Four things could cause this periodic failure:

The floppy controller.
The cable.
The floppy drive.
Overloaded PSU (unlikely).
Most people have an extra floppy cable lying around so it might be easiest to replace that first. If you don't have an extra cable then try connecting the drive using the other connector on the cable. Your drive would then be designated with B: in stead of A:. It could also just be that the cable has come loose and needs to pressed back on. Also check the alignment of the cable like Ed suggested. If the problem persists after replacing the cable try replacing the floppy drive. One of your friends might agree to swap with you in order for him to test your drive while you use his drive to see if the problem goes away. Since it's a periodic failure you might need to use a different drive for a considerable amount of time before any errors occur. You didn't say how long there usually was between the failures, but any test should at least run for twice as long as the average time between failures (unless you experience the failure of course Finally, maybe your PSU (power supply unit) is overloaded. Your computer uses maximum power during boot so an insufficient wattage would typically provoke failures during boot. In order to test this you could try to disconnect your CD-ROM drive and CD-R(W) drive. This should give you enough slack to avoid overloading the PSU. I don't consider this a likely scenario, though. If nothing can fix your problem then it might be the onboard floppy controller. A periodic failure is a real bitch since it's hard for the reseller to recreate the failure, but you'll just have to insist that you've tried everything else. I hope this helps

| I had this too ... On my *first* CUSL2-C board (ASUS quality control is a bit not good) I had this problem along with hard drive corruption. I had changed cables to no avail, but when I RMA'd my board, it came back ok. HOWEVER, if you do not wish to do this, and everything else is working, I would recommend what I did to live with it ... 1) Turn off Search for Floppy Drive (or whatever it is called) in the BIOS -and- 2) Change the boot order so that floppy drive is not on the list. BEFORE people start to nay-say, please let me point out that if the problems are identical, then his drive, while failing on cold boot, is fully shown and functional in windows (please confirm this). The drive will still work fine, and you will boot up fine. Let us know |

| Might be related to drive manufacturer too. No specifics, but it wouldn't be the first time someone has tried two or three different FDDs before it started working. ddd |
