PCI slots

I have a Adaptec SCSI card 2906 that I want to install in my cusl2-c motherboard. The instruction with the card says that it has to have an IRQ of 10 or above and not shared. I am confused with page 28 of the asus manual. On the left side of the colum it has PCI slots1 - 6. At the top of the column there are letters A - H. my question is what do the letters A-H stand for? PCI slot 2 is not shared at letter G. PCI slot 3 is not shared at letter H and PCI slot 6 is not shared at letter C. If any one knows please let me know. Thanks Clint

The chart shows whether slots share an IRQ, and the priority of automatic IRQ assignment by the BIOS (the A-B-C etc. along the top). To set up your SCSI card, the easiest thing is to install it in an unshared PCI slot: 2, 3 or 6. If you're not using a CNR LAN (no card in the CNR slot), PCI slot 4 can also be treated as unshared. Note the PCI slot # you've got your SCSI card in, & boot to BIOS. Go to the Advanced Menu & select "PCI Configuration". Set the IRQ of the slot your SCSI's in to the # you want to use. I'd suggest 12 if you're using a USB mouse, 10 or 11 otherwise. Then select "PCI/PNP IRQ Resource Exclusion" at the bottom of the menu and set the IRQ you've chosen for your SCSI to [Yes]. This should get your SCSI sorted out. See pp 66-67 of the CUSL2-C manual for the relevant BIOS menus & settings.

BTW, welcome to the boards!

Thanks SKI for the reply. I put the card in slot #4 and set the IRQ to 12. ( no card in CNR slot) My scanner seems to be working ok. I still have "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Sterring" ( what ever that is) shared on IRQ 12. The scanner software don't seem to load as quick as it did in my old computer with the old ISA card, but the scanner dose work. This "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Sterring" is also shared on IRQs #3,#5,#9,#10 and#11. Also there is "SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus" shared on IRQ #9.
Thanks again Clint

Hey Clint,

Had a few ideas that might affect your SCSI, so I checked a few things out.

1) Your speed issue might merely be related to the relative capabilities of your old and new cards. You'd need to compare specs: see the link below for data on your 2906 (Adaptec 2906 support page):
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...uct%2fAVA-2906

2) You may improve things by using the latest available drivers for your SCSI card and scanner. You'll find a link to the 2906 dtivers on the support page noted above. You'll want to check out drivers for your scanner as well. This MAY help a lot...worth checking into.

3) As it turns out, Adaptec now says you can ignore the IRQ and sharing issues you originally asked about. That having been said, IMHO your setup is much less likely to cause problems (specifically, resource conflicts). Here's a link to the Adaptec Knowledge Base article on the topic: http://ask.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/adapt...HQmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=

4) Your ACPI IRQ holders for PCI IRQ steering and SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus all look normal to me. FWIW they're present in my rig too (I'm running win98se), and my understanding is that this is normal for my OS and the ACPI function. They don't "count" in terms of IRQ sharing, so they're nothing to worry about.

Glad to help, man. Have a good one!
