| I was wondering how much difference there is between the ATA ultra 100 raid and the basic ATA 100 cards, besides $70? Thinking of adding more toys,go figure! Thanks Darkstar

| Re: Promise ATA 100 fastrack raid Quote:
Seriously, I almost want to scream. RAID can be good and it can be a nightmare. I spent 8 hours fighting a PC just yesterday with 2 45GIG IBM drives in a RAID 0 Array that had some corruption. If you are just looking for bragging rights to Hard Drive Benchmark heaven........Go RAID 0. If you want DATA integrity with mirroring to always have a backup of you drive, Go RAID 1 or RAID 5. If you want less hassle (Not loading special drivers just to be able to see your drives) then stay away! If you DO go with ATA RAID, The Promise Controller has been the best I have worked with. | You may want to try out software RAID first if you're using WinNT or Win2K. It's about the same speed as these low-end IDE RAID controllers and you can use RAID 5 to get both speed and integrity (the low-end controllers only offer RAID 0 and RAID 1). - StarTraveller

| The Promise ATA RAID controller is excellent. Currently I have one running 4x 60GXP 60GB HD's in a RAID 0+1 array. This way I can loose up to two HD's and everything will continue to function and my data will be safe. Performance is great, drivers are easy to install, the list goes on. When I bought the Promise I'd heard some nightmare stories about RAID controllers based on the Highpoint chipset - that's the reason I decided to spend a little more on the Promise. |

| Hey darkstar, The Ultra is a PCI ATA 100 controller card: NO RAID! There's some stuff posted on modding this card to FastTrak ("simple" hardware mod + BIOS flash: be advised VOIDS WARRANTY). Check this forum & StorageReview.com's forums if this interests you. FWIW I'm running a FastTrak 100: zero probs & good performance (benches AND real-world large file work). My real world HDD performance using 2 75 GXP 30GB HDDs in RAID 0 is roughly equivalent to a single Seagate X15 Cheetah in terms of large file read/write. All for WAY less $$$ (and 40 more GB, too). ATA RAID can be a nice compromise in terms of performance VS price. Search this Forum. There's lots on the subject. Keri, Check StorageReview.com There's been some serious issues with the 45 GB IBM 75 GXP HDDs: not related to controller.
