If I remember correctly, I don't think you can use optical drives on the promise controller. I never tried an optical drive on the ICH5R, but I think it would work.

I have a Lite-On SATA DVD drive connected to the ICH5R controller on a P4C800-E and it works just fine.

Re: sata blu-ray drive on p4c800e-dx?

well finally moved my raid array over to the prommy controller,
added another sata drive to ich5 sata, ( had a 100gb 2.5" lappy
drive sitting around) and got the blu-ray sata installed as well.
few probs as far as getting bd to play movies, as cyberlink doesn't
like my 7800gsoc, or my dvi to hdmi hook up to 37 incher.
No worries though as Any DVD SlySoft AnyDVD | any dvd, region free, dvd copy, copy dvd movies, dvd decoder, dvd ripper, macrovision, dvd copying software
told them both to p*@#-off. all is working very well.
