Any of the Adaptec's are the best:

The best for a home solution is the 29160N. I have the 29160, but should have gotten the 29160N. What will you be using it for?

why the 29160N, i noticed there was a different external connector that maby is better for external SCSI devices, thats one of my thoughts.
I was going to use mine first of all for two hard drives and mabe a scanner, but itīs hard to desied which card to use

Kidde, the 29160N is better for legacy external home devices such as a scanner. The reason is that the external connector is an UW connector. You will need a 68 to HD-50-pin cable with HIGH BYTE TERMINATION!!!!!!!

If you go with the regular 29160 the external connector is Ultra 160. So, if you attach a scanner to it, it will slow your internal 160 devices down to the UW protocol. Or you can get a custom cable that will go from the internal UW 68 pin connector to an external 68 (or HD 50) pin plate adapter. Note that this will use another one of your slots in the back and you will still need the special cable I mentioned above.

Mike, if you are only needing the SCSI card for a CD device, then any Adaptec card will do, providing you never want to reap the high speed benefits for future SCSI drives. Anything form the 2940 and above will do you just fine. Here is a good place to get one:

I suggest getting a refurbished one to save money. This place tests and warranties all refurbished SCSI cards. They are very good! They have brand new stuff too and can make custom cables like they did for me

Mike, this post really belongs in the "drives & controller" section, so I am moving it there now. Nothing personal, just a little house keeping

If you ONLY need it for CD/DVD devices then I would suggest the AHA-2904 (not 2940!) and it's really cheap too. I don't know the price in dollars, but my guess would be around $40-50 and AFAIR that's including a cable.

I used to work in a retail store and it was a very popular bundle together with Plextor CD-ROM and burner

The advantage of buying a "bigger" card is that you then can start using SCSI harddisk drives also, but that's a pretty expensive option since the bigger cards cost $50-150 more.

About scanners - previously I was really hooked on the idea that if I were to buy a scanner then it should be SCSI (I really had my eyes set on this HP thingie ), but this was pre-USB. Today I wouldn't even consider a SCSI scanner - USB is simply so much easier
