Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Hey guys, I just bought 2 1TB Seagate drives. I went to their site and entered the serial #'s, and they both read out these drives are not affected. I wonder if I should keep them as I have a 30 day return?

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Before you decide what you're gonna do Skully, fire up SIW or some other drive util and check how much cache is reported on these drives.
I have three that are affected, one of the 500's just reflashed succesfully after crashing on the previous update, all three drives ( one of them is an SD04) all report 0 kbytes using SIW...
This includes the one I just flashed with the latest firmware.

I checked both of my firmware-updated Seagate 500s with Everest Ultimate Edition and it reports both drives have the full 32MB cache.

Then I tried SIW and it said 0 kbytes.

Now I am really confused....

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

I would trust Seagate's serial number listing over some random utility program, even though Seagate were the ones who screwed up in the first place. At this point Seagate has made such a huge PR blunder they can't try to cover stuff up.

Thanks for the info. My two HD's are in RAID-O, no utility will read a RAID-0 cache. I could be wrong. I took the serial numbers of the boxes. And ran them on the Seagate site. Both came back not effected, no action needed. At least I can't find anythng in SIW on the cache.

Intel Matrix Storage Console will read both drives' total information Skully----serial number, type, and even current firmware......even when in RAID....

Just open it up and double click on RAID-----then on each of your two drives....

That's what I used.....

Everest reads it correctly----SIW doesn't.....

Nor does HD Tach at the moment.

So you are fine Brian....

I think Everest is the only Utilility that reads those Seagate Caches properly....

At this point in time.....

I saw some traffic saying HD Tach was working on getting their software updated to do it....

And even Everest may not read them when you are in a RAID

If I have some time tomorrow----I'll try.....

I just looked at my Intel Matrix Storage and it does not show the cache either. I also looked in Everest and it definately shows the cache size on all 4 of my drives. Two drives Raid 0 and two drives just as Sata.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Everest is a no-show also....
I may return my two Seagate for a couple WD drives. There's just to many problems with Seagate drives.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective Firmware!!!!

To say it's been a PR DISASTER with Seagate lately is to put it lightly.....

What a fiasco.....

Having said that----these new 32 meg cache Seagates seem like pretty good drives (I guess once you have the Firmware fixed)

Quiet-----very fast----good warranty-----and the MTBF that they post is excellent.....

IF what they claim is actually true......

Skully----my bet is that your drives are fine and that the Utilities for reading caches just haven't caught up

1TB and 32 meg caches are pretty new.....

Everest reads the 500 Gig Drives fine.....

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

What version of Everest are you guys using? My Everest shows the cache on my seagate 32m drives as "unknown". I have version 4.60.1500 Ultimate
It sees the cache ok on my WD drives though.
