Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Yeah I changed my mind about W7 as the culprit. I couldn't get a cache reading with Vista 64 on two Raptors in RAID-0......

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Well, I'm not sure what to think.... I have three drives that say o kbytes buffer, but they perform ok, I suppose Everest and SIW just can't read the buffer size.... This whole thing has just been wierd.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Here are the Everest screenshots from my system. Maybe the programs cannot read the cache of the larger Seagate drives.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

I just downloaded a Trial of Everest 4.60

Said immediately that some features of the x58 Chipset it did not support yet and did I want to run a full system scan and report the results to Lavalys so it will help in their efforts to update Everest.....

I said sure....

Ran a super long report that reported on EVERYTHING----including the two 500 Gig Seagates in my RAID 0----both with 32 meg caches.

Showed same information for both drives----just reported serial numbers differently. My Pics below are for Drive 1.

One part of the final report shows Buffer Unknown---an obvious mistake.......

Because then another part of the same report shows Read/Look Ahead Enabled
and Write Cache Enabled

and finally a last portion of the report under Physical ATA Device shows Buffer Size 32 MB

See the screen shots below.....

This is simply a case of the utility software not having fully caught up with the new Seagates and especially the 32 meg caches....

They are enabled----and they are running------once you get the latest firmware on the drive.....

I'm stopping worrying about it.....

Gotta do important stuff....

Like play STALKER Clear Sky!!!!

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

OK, Mine too, I just wasn't scrolling down far enough to see it.
Griff, my 16mg drive (500g) shows up on the top listing like yours too, it's just the 32mg ones that read funny.

Yeah I didn't realize Vista had the snipping tool. I have got to the point, I don't mess with any other OS other then W7.....

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

So, is the consensus that this last firmware update is okay to use? I was trying to wait until everything settled down a bit.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

The 2 drives that I flashed worked ok.
Note there were 2 separate firmwares for them.

Re: Seagate Drives with Defective firmware!!!!

Mike,

My two 32 meg cache 500Gig drives are working great so I'd say go for it...

The earlier versions of the updated firmware were defective....go figure...

But the latest versions seem fine......
