Angry Cuslc-2 & W2k = can't write to disk

Hi there...
1) Brand new Cuslc-2 and brand new PIII 1ghz...512 ram @133...Rage Fury pro AGP...creative soundblaster live value...D-link network card...supra modem 56...firewire card...Maxtor 30G 7200 ata 100.
well...I tried to install win2k and at a given point it tells me that some filez could not be read from the cd cuz it is not a win2k installation image (retail cd)...then I tried with another cd and same ****.
Then, I went to win98...installed ok...815inf ok, intel ata 100 ok..while installing office xp..."can't write to disk-some data might be lost" After a few reboots the OS is ****ed up and format c:
2) changed the mobo cuz I screwed it up while changing heatsink-fan and changed HD...same ****. I tried F6 while win2k installation and installed intel drivers (ata 100)...same ****
The HDs work ok in other computers but not in this one. Bought a new HD...same ****..
Is the mobo "eating" HD's?

Hi,

It sounds like to me its your cd-rom. I had one cdrom
that would read some cd's yet wouldn't read others. (all retail software)
I replace it with an old 8 speed to test and I could read all my cd's. If you have an old cd try it and see.

Thank you guys for replying!!!

I had checked everything, cables, tried IDE and ATA, another cd rom...

Until I got the solution....BAD MEMORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had 2x256 and I had to remove one piece...now works great!!!!!

The "bad memory" was bought at compusa and it was quite cheap...I don't have any problem with compusa but maybe next time I will go for a brand memory even if I have to spend a few more $$

Total cost of the mess:

1 new motherboard ASUS CLSC2-C cuz I broke one of the parts to hold the heatsink trying to remove it thinking that was the cause
1 new processor, same although I did not broke it
1 new hard drive, thinking that it was because of it
1 new graphics card, thinking the problem was some kind of incompatibility with my radeon 32 AGP...

a lot of hours messing around + my wife got angry at me + etc..etc..

At least I can almost build a new computer with the spare parts

Thanks everyone, and beware bad memory!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you found out your problem Pepi - too bad it was a hard road you travelled. Another lesson learned.

I think I'll moved this to the memory section in case somebody else has a similar problem...

Beware - some Win2KPro bundled PCs supplied their own Win2KPro CDs for restoring the OS on those PCs only. I know of some Dell Win2KPro CDs supplied with Dell Win2KPro bundled PCs will only install/reinstall on those PCs only.
