Thumbs up NEW version of Memtest >>> out . . . .

..... just thought i'd pass this out to all for here :

Memtest86+ V4.00 was just released!

It should have been named Memtest86+ 3.00, but in order to avoid confusion with the original Memtest, it was renamed 4.00. This new version adds many new features and numerous bug-fixes. Memtest86+ 4.00 should be able to detect more memory errors faster and now supports many new chipset, CPUs and memory controllers. One of the new features is the detection of memory brands and parts numbers (works with Intel DDR2/DDR3 chipsets right now). The compilation issues with newer versions of gcc are fixed too. Here is the complete changelog :

Memtest86+ V4.00 changelog

--------------------------

- Major Architectural changes

- First pass twice faster (reduced iterations)

- Detect DDR2/3 brands and part numbers on Intel Chipsets

- Corrected detection for Intel "Lynnfield" CPU

- Added detection for Intel "Clarkdale" CPU

- Added detection for Intel "Gulftown" CPU

- Corrected detection for AMD 45nm K10 CPU

- Added detection for AMD "Magny-Cours" CPU

- Solved crash with AMD Geode LX

- Added detection for Intel XMP Memory

- Added for CPU w/ 0.5/1.5/3/6/12/16/18/24MB L3

- Added "clean" DMI detection for DDR3/FBDIMM2

- Better detection of Integrated Memory Controllers

- Complies with SMBIOS 2.6.1 specs

- Fixed compilation issues with gcc 4.2+

- Many others bug fixes

Download is available at = Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

.....ENJOY ! ! !

mr. Charles

Re: NEW version of Memtest >>> out . . . .

I thought I would try to put it on a USB key so I could run it on my netbook, but when I run this exe: Download - Pre-Compiled EXE file for USB Key (Pure DOS) , it just briefly opens a command window and then closes. That's it. Anyone know how to use this to create a bootable memtest USB key?
TIA.

Re: NEW version of Memtest >>> out . . . .

Just ran it in XP from a bootable Stick - no problems

For XP:

Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (free) (server2)

Instructions - This HP utility will format any USB flash drive, with your choice of FAT, FAT32, or NTFS partition types. Optionally you can also make the disk BOOTABLE by specifying a file location - Use the Windows 98 system files available.

Windows 98 System Files (DO FIRST!)
This is a zip file that contains all of the system files that you will need for making a bootable USB disk. Extract all these files into a folder on main drive C:/. When you run the HP USB Format Utility select the directory for your bootable files.

Vista/Win 7:

Disregard Run Acronis Product/Acronis Media Creation. Use instruction for bootable USB Stick only:

Thumbs up Re: NEW version of Memtest >>> out . . . .

BTW, before JT posted the info above, I solved my problem using a different method, which I think is really cool. So, I thought I'd post it here for others.

I had previously used the info on this page to put Acronis True Image and Disk Director on a USB stick:
Using Grub4DOS to Create a Bootable Drive
I used the ISO option. When it boots, I get a simple menu, where I can choose TI or DD.
So, I thought: Why not just add the Memtest ISO to the USB stick and edit the "menu.lst" file to include Memtest? I did and it worked GREAT! I now have a bootable USB stick with TI, DD & Memtest on it that I can use on my netbook (no ODD). I can choose any one of these utilities from a simple menu after boot.
You can use this method for putting as many ISOs as you want on a USB stick.
This is very cool!
I am very happy with this simple and elegant solution.

Re: NEW version of Memtest >>> out . . . .

The previous versions of the precompiled EXE had a tendancy to hang on startup (it just showed a blue screen with a green box in the left corner).

Lets hope this version fixes the problem... which it probably wont because its probably using the same DOS wrapper.
