Help me choose a new router

OK folks,
looking a new router and of course security is somewhat of an issue.
here are the 2 Im thinking of

Standards: IEEE802.3, IEEE 802.3u
Protocols: IP routing, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, PPPoE, DHCP, RIP v1, RIP v2 , IPSec (ESP), MD5, SHA-1, DEX, 3DES, IKE
Security: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
Ports: 1 x 10Mbps RJ-45 WAN port, 8 x 10/100Mbps Auto-Sensing, Auto-Uplink RJ-45 LAN ports

or

Standards: IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u
Protocols: IP routing, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, PPPoE, DHCP (client and server), RIP v1, RIPv2, IPSec (ESP, AH), MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, IKE, PKI
Security: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) , Intrusion Detection System (IDS) including logging, reporting and e-mail alerts, and Web URL keyword filtering
Ports: Eight 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing, Auto Uplink & RJ-45 LAN ports, One 10/100BASE-T Ethernet RJ-45 WAN port, One RS-232 serial port.

what do you all think for better security or do they do the same thing just with more buttons?

Router 2 seems much better! You have full logging capability.

Both seem to have adequate security but #2 seems more versatile & flexible. It allows you to do something about an attack. However the first one also has a detection system - there must be some way for it to log as well.

I notice the second one has an RS-232 port - nice! I assume it's for firmware flashing? If it's for advanced monitoring, even better. #2 also complies with more networking protocols.

What kind of a price difference are we talking about here?

#2 is definitely superior, but how much more is it?

I can see why. The first one might do you fine if you don't want to spend that much cash though.

Which models/manufacturers are they?

I'd say go for the cheaper one. Even that one has more advanced features than any consumer-level router.

Do you really need 8 ports?

yes, I need 8 ports.
I have a graphic box and play box,
wife has a play box and banking box ( only used for online bank nothing else, only on line a few minutes a week, my little security blanket).
And I have a test box.
Then if i work on someone elses comp, I have a work bench.
Way to many boxes.

So I think the cheeper one is for me.

Hey Fraoch,
Heres the deal.
I contacted Netgear and they cant tell me when the version 3 NETGEAR Cable/DSL ProSafe VPN Firewall with 8-Port Switch, Model FVS318 - Retail
spec link http://www.netgear.com/pdf_docs/FVS318v3_ds_06dec04.pdf
will be in main stream.
The only way to tell is if you look at the serial on the bottom of the unit. Great, lets just open the box find ver 2 and send back with a restocking fee.

So, for a little mor money, Im thinking get the NETGEAR Cable/DSL ProSafe High-Speed VPN Firewall Router, Model FVS328 -
Retail spec link http://http://www.netgear.com/pdf_docs/FVS328_ds_r2.pdf

Im not very good with networking but learning fast, do you this be to difficult to setup?

No, routers are pretty easy to set up. Almost all of them use a Web Browser based interface - the manual will give you the internal IP to access the router interface, user name and password.

Then you need to set up two major things, the WAN side and the LAN side. In most cases all you need to do is set each to DHCP - on the WAN side to accept an IP and DNS server information from your broadband modem, and on the LAN side to serve as a DHCP server, i.e., to set internal IP addresses to all systems connected to the router either directly or via a switch, and to pass the DNS server info along to each system. That's usually it, except for some port blocking info and some other small settings, like activating port stealthing, etc. Most of the newer routers have extensive help screens which explain each setting, and the manuals and quick start guides are generally well done as well. In essence, with just a few settings, most are set the correct way by default in the routers, you can be up and running in a few minutes.

Most of the time, it takes much longer to do the cable wiring then to do the router setup.

Thanks PC,
I have a router now but really didnt mess with it much except for the password.
Usually just hook it up and it finds everything.
Now, I want to go a little more advanced with the blocking of things and port closing thingy, just some added security.

What do you think about the FVS328 over the FVS318?
