How can I boot from the net?

Hi guys!

I have an Asus p4p800-e deluxe and I would like to know if it's possible to boot the computer from the ethernet port....
How do I do that? How do I configure my bios for that?

Thanks in advance....

I think you are talking about PXE? Booting into a pre-OS environment?.... I supose you need a server on the other hand and a bootrom (or floppy) to boot from the net but I haven't played with this for a while now and the last time I did, I did it with an old VAX server... sorry.

As far as I know, the P4P800-E Deluxe supports Wake on LAN, which is the term used for starting a computer from the Internet. This is usually achieved by sending a so called 'magic packet' to the IP your computer is using to start it.

I'm pretty sure this requires the computer to have a static IP and not a router/DHCP-based one, but I'm not 100% sure. You would have to enable it in your BIOS, at least. Check your motherboard's manual for Wake on LAN and it should contain some information.

This page talks a bit about Wake on LAN: http://gsd.di.uminho.pt/jpo/software...an/mini-howto/
