| How do I set up peer to peer with winXP and win2000? How do I set up a peer to peer network with a winXP computer and win2000 computer so that they can see each other and share files? ![]() I built my first XP system last year and plugged it into the LAN. It can see and share files with only the win98se computer. The XP system sees the win98se computer and shares with no problems, but it will not see the win2000 computer on the network at all. Similarly, the win2000 computer sees and shares files with the win98se computer with no problems, but it will not see the XP computer on the network at all. To transfer files between the XP box and the win2k box I have to first copy the file to the win98se box and then copy the file from there to the XP box. All computers can each access the internet with no problem via the dsl modem plugged into my trusty ol' SMC Barracade router bought years ago (about 2003 I think). What do I need to do for the win2000 computer to see the XP computer (and visa versa)??? Are there some updated networking files I need to add to the win2000 box? Certainly this must have been a problem that was solved way back when XP was first released, but I can't find an answer now. ??? ??? |

| Re: How do I set up peer to peer with winXP and win2000? Hi Trav -- Have you set them both to the same workgroup name? In XP that is under Control Panel/Performance&Maintenance/System/ ComputerName (ignore "Performance&Maintenance" if your control panel is displayed as icons instead of text on a blue background). I don't know where the setting is in W2K, but it's probably something similar. Hope all goes well with you lately! Regards, -- Al

| Re: How do I set up peer to peer with winXP and win2000? Hey ctal!!! ![]() Both the XP box and the win2k box have a "Microsoft Windows Network" folder under which is the same "Workgroup" folder showing the same win98se computer name on the LAN plus the name of the XP or win2k computer depending upon which computer I'm looking at. The only clue I have is someone once told me thayt the TCP/IP network on XP is not compatable with the TCP/IP network on win2000. That there are files on the XP OS disk that I must copy onto/into the win2000 OS in order to make them compatable. And so I search for the answer but cannot find one. Whatever happened to WOWN? It used to be so easy to read and find answers there. ![]() |

| Re: How do I set up peer to peer with winXP and win2000? Ahhhhhh. A clue! (maybe ... ) Under the "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" box; the win2000 computer has under the "WINS" tab "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" marked, whereas the XP computer has under the "WINS" tab "Default" marked! Which is the correct setting??? I imagine they both should be the same.![]() Last edited by traveler; 07-15-2009 at 07:43 PM.. |

Yep. That was it. They are both set to Default now. And they now show up where they weren't showing before. Thanks ctal. ![]() | |

If that doesn't solve the problem, go through the steps around the middle of this page under the Windows 2000 heading, for adding protocols and services: How To Set Up A LAN - Set up a LAN And look through the settings on the XP machine under network connection properties, making sure in particular that file and printer sharing is enabled. Hope that helps, -- Al Edit: The above was written before seeing your last post. Way to go!!

| Re: How do I set up peer to peer with winXP and win2000? Thanks ctal. Who woulda thunk something as insignificant as the name server had to have matching active settings. But it's not over yet. Although both computers show up on the LAN now, only the XP machine can retrieve files from the win2000 machine. There's something blocking the win2000 machine from accessing the XP machine (the XP firewall is off). But at least it shows up now! There's still a setting somewhere I gotta tweak. ![]() |

All is good now. ![]() ![]() __________________ Asus X48 Rampage Formula / Intel Q9450 2.66 @ 3.2 / 2 x 2GB OCZ Reaper HPC PC2 8500 / VisionTek Radeon HD3870X2 OverClocked Edition / 24" DeLL Ultrasharp 2408WFP monitor / Western Digital Raptor X Hard Drive / Two Western Digital Caviar RE2 WD5001ABYS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives / Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Elite Pro 7.1 / Creative Gigaworks S750 7.1 Speaker System / Lian Li 343B cube case / PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Crossfire Edition / IOGEAR GCS1782 GCS1782 Dual-Link DVI KVMP switch with 7.1 audio |
