| I'm thinking of finally getting a ADSL connection... Overhere most users are still on dial-up... I checked around for american providers to see if it's about the same as I'm getting. I saw Earthlink offers a 1.5 Mbit/s (down) and 256 Kbit/s (up) connection.. I'm thinking about getting a USB modem with 1024Kbit/s downstream and 256Kbit/s upstream... Is it any good?? I saw Earthlink offers a 1.5 Mbit/s (down) and 256 Kbit/s (up) connection.. I figured since I'm coming from a 56k6 dial-up everything would be better but I need some advice from current ADSL users.. I think I'm going to pay around $60 a month for it but that's pretty normal around here....

| Get the ethernet modem and go for the fastest speed you can find. Because you will get use to it & want more, even though it's faster than what you already have

| You won't BELIEVE the difference...you'll be spoiled forever. I don't think I could ever go back to dial-up.

| Ethernet modem works for me, too - local Jump.net provider is good enough, $34.99/mo. You're paying way too much - I know that phone bills, in general, suck big time in Europe. (One more reason to come to good ol' USofA..hehe..) So, you may as well go with the fastest line available for your area... Bajo.

| Funny I should ask this question now. I have only 1 option for ADSL thru 1 provider. It seems politics are preventing our little town from connecting to the rest of the world. They figure since it's the only provider it would monopolize the market!! Go Figure.. This afternoon I spoke to some people from that same provider which happenend to be on our site (company). They said it suxx big-time and advised me to wait for cable which may be more influenced by the number of people on-line but will get a minimum bandwidth that can be compared to ADSL.. I don't know. Thinking of it, 1024/256 doesn't sound that impressive.. Not for $60 a month! Cryogen, stop babbling will you... I'm allready slobbering, 5mbit down/684 up.. hehe Bajo: Well, I'm keeping that imigration thing in the back of my head until there's a nice job for me overthere. Maybe in the international HQ of our company which is in the US. Quote:

| I have cable...if it goes out they have dial-up as a back up. I don't bother - I couldn't stand it. My brother-in-law still has dial-up and when I work on his 'puter I swear it's like pulling teeth it's so slow.

| It depends on what kind of protocol they use as well SZ. Some ISPs (like mine) use PPPoE. In this case, there is PPPoE Header loss (most cases up to 13% of ur speed) ISPs use this as its easier to implement and stealing of IPs (Yes dynamic) are harder. If ur ISP does uses this, they'll probably use a shareware program like EnterNet 2 establish the "dialup". I'd suggest u try http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/ instead. Max MTU is 1492 in this case. Besides this, u can have PPPoA (same as PPPoE cept its ATM not Ethernet). Alternatively CIP/RFC 1577 i think(termed "always on) is used. With this, u have a constant connection which doesn't need a "dialup". There is no header loss (so u get ur full 1.5Mb/s, line conditions count as well) and connections r made as simple as "ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew) Most of the time, IPs are static (do not change) Max MTU can be 1500.

| If it makes you feel better - my cable is the only thing available here besides dial-up. I have no alternatives - the rates reflect the lack of competition. ![]()

| Also USB is a big no no. Go for an external modem which hooks up to ur ethernet card. Some ISPs say OK and give u a USB Ethernet device. This is lame as well so insist on an ethernet PCI card if u dont have one already. No one uses internal DSL modems anymore so I dont think u need 2 worry bout those.
