vista can see network printer but XP cannot

Greetings,

4 pc network, all wired via router/switch, xp pro SP3, all sharing, no issues.

Add vista PC, wired, no issues with sharing

Add HP 2300 laserjet with built-in NIC, vista pc no issues, xp pc's cannot see it

Connect to 1 XP PC via USB, install drivers (automatic), set to share, XP PC's all see and can use printer, but only if the one acting as print server is on.

Tried turning all firewalls off, no difference. What have I missed?!!

Cheers, Pat

Re: vista can see network printer but XP cannot

If the built-in network interface is a "JetDirect" printserver, which I believe may be the case, try this:

HP Install Network Printer Wizard*-* HP Install Network Printer Wizard - Product Overview and General Printer Installation Steps - bpj07382 - HP Business Support Center

See page 72 (page 74 of the pdf) of the user manual for information on printing out a configuration page, which will allow you to determine if a JetDirect is present or not:

Hope that helps,
-- Al

Yes, it is a jet direct, and whilst i susopected it wasn't working, the fact that the vista machine finds it and can print to it without issue means that it is actually functional.

The issue I have is therefore why the XP machines cannot

I don't know why the XP machines cannot see it, but in another forum I had found someone who reported a similar problem, which was successfully resolved by downloading and running the software I linked to.

Is there a way on the printer to set the "workgroup" name?
I believe Vista will see the printer even if the home network name is wrong.
