2 or 3 gigs for gaming? YES.

Well, hey everyone. Been away for a while but I'm comin' back! lol I had to get another job so I'm workin' about 54 hours a week right now and I'm just getting used to the new schedule.

Anyways, onto what's goin' on.

Well, my OCZ Platinum 3200 1GB (2x512mb) El Rev.2 (man, that's a mouthful) kit died. Well, specifically one of the modules in the kit died so I had to RMA the whole kid.

So, my experience with OCZ Support was 'ok' at best to begin with... but it did get better. This is what happened:

I sent in my RMA of my Platinum 1GB kit and I had to pay for the shipping as per usual for these deals. I don't hear back for about a week and a half, so I call in and talk to the dude on my case.

He says, "Sorry, we don't carry your ram anymore and since it's the top of the line we don't have anything higher. So how do you feel about having the Gold 3200 El GX XTC 1GB kit with a 1GB flash drive for your trouble?"

I was like, sure why not?

So, they send me back the 1GB kit, which I was a bit disappointed in not having the same quality ram as before, but hey at least I got a 1gb flash drive. So, I go to stick it in my computer and guess what? IT DOESN'T FIT!!!! hahaha

They sent me mislabeled DDR2 ram! So, I called them back and let them know. I don't hear back from the guy for a few days so I call again. This time I get a Service Rep Supervisor. THIS DUDE GOT ON IT!

He paid for my shipping, cross shipped, and then gave me 2GB GX XTC GOLD 3200 DDR Ram.... AND I got to keep the 1GB flash drive!!!!!!!

Sooooooooooooooo....

Now I have 3GB of GOLD OCZ Ram and it's awesome! All my games run soooo smooth. And I have to say... I didn't think 3GB would make much of a difference than 2... but it really does. I run Oblivion and it helps sooo much. BF2 runs great and so do a bunch of other games, plus my system is just running a whole lot more smooth.

Sure, it could be because I had some shizzy ram in there, but I gotta say that before all the errors, Oblivion just runs way better with the extra ram. I have full settings maxed out on 1024x768 with my 7900gtx, and AMD 4000san diego.

Anyone else have any experience with high amounts of ram and gaming?

Sorry for writing so much, I just figured I'd tell the whole story. :P

I've been gaming on 4GB's of ram for about a year, and don't regret getting it. One is better off having two to four gigs of ram now days for gaming.

Two gigs are a minimum but I can't imagine having 3 or 4 is better in terms of reducing load times, other than the fact it can cache more, but that's not really the same as stuttering from VM swapping.

32 bit Vista----4 Gigs recognized??

If I spend the extra----and get 4 x1 gig pc6400 DDR2 sticks

Vista 32 Bit will recognize and use it----correct??? (as long as the MoBo Bios will accept up to 4 gigs)

To go higher than 4 Gigs----I'd have to use the 64 Bit version.

I could NEVER get 4 gigs to be recognized with XP.

Before I spend the money----I just want to make sure.....

I saw an article at Anand that showed that the more memory with Vista----the better the performance overall. They seemed to think the sweet spot was 3 gigs

So I gues you could go two 1 gig sticks and two 512 sticks----using the same basic timings and voltage in their specs....

I don't think 32 bit vista will recognize 4 gigs either, you have to run 64 bit .....

Wrong, 32bit Vista will see a full 4GB's of memory, but if you ever need to go more than 4GB's of ram, you will need to get a 64bit copy of Vista.

Read the following webpage, before making a statement like you did again.

OK, ok, this has to stop! Every time I see this I cringe. Windows addresses all 4GB. ALL OF IT. There is no see only partial, a bit, some, or whatever. ATINut is on point, and as he said you are all incorrect if you think in that way.

How, all 4GB is utilize is another subject matter, and I leave it up to a previous link I posted for the details. So, please, stop misinforming people or incorrectly describing the 4GB barrier. All it takes is just a little education, and these horribly misinforming posts can stop.

Also, to recommend a memory size is futile for it is too relative, and even arbitrary. Really, the golden rule I learned long ago is: The more memory the better-period. It is simple as that. If you cannot simply gauge that you need more memory, then perhaps you do not even need to think about it.

Please read to understand the 4GB barrier better.

Please forgive me all mighty one if you read my post I said " I said I think it wouldn't", I didn't say that it absolutely would, so unless I know for absolute 100% sure I won't post anything here again....

See what you started El Wiseguy. All you wanted to do was post your experience and maybe get a few comments and all heck breaks lose. Just kidding, lighten up people, its just a forum and were all here to learn or help others. Sometimes we all give misinformation. I remember one time when I was wrong but later found out I was mistaken.

Question so, El WiseGuy. . . . . .

. . . . so, you are stating for here that you went from 1GB memory to 2GB, and now at 3GB of memory??? For this upgrading you can see & feel a BIG improvement in all, OR Gaming, OR OS & app's?????? ............just curious to get your pont of noticed-improvement's of from the upp'ng in the memory past 1GB........
