| I recently bought a CUSL2 board, since then I seem to have some problems regarding memory. When simply moving the mouse across the screen, it can slow down as it used to when I was running Win95 with 8MB of RAM. I have 256MB Crucial 133 CAS 2 RAM (1*128 + 2*64), I have tried swapping the modules around or using just one module at a time and also tried using no-brand 100Mhz RAM. When I try to sign on to the Internet everything slows down dramatically, for example if I click on the ‘Start’ button, it can take 5 or 6 seconds before anything appears. Also suffering random freezing problems, this normally occurs when a program has just started. I have checked for virus’s (not running in background), used Norton Utilities and checked that no unnecessary programs are being loaded at start-up. Reformatted the hard drive for clean install of Win98 SE several times, downloaded and reinstalled latest drivers for everything from BIOS to Intel’s hard drive controllers. CPU is overclocked, but temperature is fine, running a Celeron 600 @ 900, I know it will go a lot higher but am trying to cut down all possible instability factors. I cannot think what else to try, and ideas or help would be really appreciated. | Try to install only the Windows from clean install, do not instal Intel ATA driver cause it gives you problem on certain system, especially if you use CDRW, but install the Intel Inf driver, because Windows 98 does not have the native driver for Intel 815 chipset. Run it in non overclocked condition (66 MHz for Celeron) & use only 1x 128MB Crucial RAM. Are all your RAM double sided? If they are double sided SDRAM each, then using 1 x 128MB + 2 x 64 MB give you a total of 6 banks, that is your SDRAM will run @max 100 MHz but it will not be as stable as if you are using only 4 banks. I happened to experienced this & get crc error upon finishing downloading 5 MB zip files. the files become corrupted.

| Aloha Steven, I had the same type of problem when I first set up my machine. I had installed Winzip 7.0 from my server to my new toy. All installation files were on my server and just the Winzip icon was on my new toy desk top. When I ran my toy without the server running, my new toy system ran like a dog with no legs. I tried everything I could think of, then I made the connection between the server being on line and not on line. My problem was simply that the machine was looking for the connection to the Winzip folder on the server and when it could not find it, "it would stall out". So I copied the complete folder from my server to my new machine, then re-wrote the short cut so that it looked at my new toy C drive and not the server for this information, and now all is well again. I don't know if this will help but sometimes we get so deep into the hardware problems we don't recognize the software part of the problems. Good luck, I hope you solve your problem.
