If you have 256MB modules they will be single sided.Even if there are 4 modules per side.DS needs 8 chips per side so 16 chips in total.

now i am very upset. according to your observations it would definatly be better to run 4 SS modules than 2 SS, right?

if so then does that mean i will get tighter timmings with 4 modules? or would i be garunteed DS buying 2 512MB PC4000 modules?

basically is there any memory that im almost garunteed to get DS?

Right now I'm running bios 1009.004, I have an antec 400W PSU, and the only other devices on the system are a chaintech GeForce FX5200, audigy 2 platinum, and an avermedia capture card. Drives are a liteon CDRW, pioneer DVR-A06U, the live-drive, a panasonic floppy, and maxtor hdd. I can't think of anything that would be causing these problems.

BTW my modules are 2x 256MB (dual channel config.)

It's because of the memory....made for higher fsb and not lower latency..the forced 2-2-2-5-1 settings of pat/mam and turbo seem to only work with the 3500's as recommended by asus on their site

I am not aware of any unbuffered (not EEC/Registered server type mem) memory at or above PC3200 that is made in a SS DIMM at 512mb. Due to the density of the chips used to make a 512 mb module, they have to be DS. Otherwise, chips with more density to make a SS512mb DIMM would drive the cost to about $800 or so. That's why you see so many types of RAM where the 512mb DIMM is DS and the 256mb DIMM is SS, the 256 uses 1/2 of the chips as the comparable 512mb module.

You should be safe buying any reputable brand of memory in a DS 512mb DIMM, just don't buy server memory which is typically made more dense so you can cram more RAM into less slots, without regard to cost.

Mike.
