Exclamation

I also have 2X256 MB double side Crucial cas2 PC133, and my machine is really running very stable @133MHz.
My settings are 2-2-2 (automatically read by SPD), 5-7, Normal.
But I have a question (which may be silly). During booting the Quick self test checks 524288KB (which is OK: 512x1024). But when I right-click on 'My computer' icon in W98SE it says 511.0MB RAM!!!??? SiSoft Sandra also says 511MB! What's wrong?

No, I'm not using the onboard graphics, as I have CUSL2-C. Yes, I have the video rom bios shadow enabled (all the rest disabled), but when I disabled it, I got again 511MB. I'm using BIOS 1006 Final and W98SE.
By the way, I have re-enabled the video rom bios shadow; is it better disabled?
Any help with my 511MB problem? Am I the only one who has it?

Exclamation BIOS Setting

In BIOS under "Advanced" and "Chip Configuration" disable "Memory Hole At 15M-16M" then Windows will report your actual installed RAM. It is a useless setting anyway and ASUS shouldn't even have it in the BIOS.

Dear pbeyer,
The setting you are noticing is of course disabled. I'm waiting for an answer in a microsoft's news server and I'll post it here.
Thanks anyway.

Sorry that wasn't your problem.

johnpapgr,

So we don't mislead others who read this post the "Memory Hole At 15M-16M" setting if enabled will cause Windows to report 1MB less than actual RAM installed. Sorry it wasn't the case for you John but it could solve the problem for others.

I don't know of any other things that can cause this but if I find one I'll let you know.

Here is the answer:

"John, look if you have a line with Himem.sys in config.sys. If you don't
need it -- REM it out, with the EMM386 line there as well."
Mikhail Zhilin (MVP MPS-D)

Well I had both HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE lines in my config.sys. When I REMed them out, Windows 98SE reported 512MB!
But as I'm really running a couple of programs in pure DOS, I'm going to leave those lines analtered and live with 511MB (as Mikhail suggested later). At least it was OK to see that the problem is explained and it was not something wrong with hardware...

Also:

"Why when I have only 256MB installed, Windows report full 256MB with or without REMing the above lines in config.sys?"

And the answer:

"There may be a himem.sys or EMM386 bug, and have the reasons to think that more than 512MB is not affected, too, if only the memory divisible by 512 (but I can be wrong here)..."
