| DDR sticks - install in pairs required? Hello, I have an old Dell Dimension 4400 which I've read can accept a max RAM size of 512 MB in each of it's two slots, DDR PC2100. Do I need to install in matched pairs? I need a min of 512 MB and don't want to spend any extra on this old machine... I haven't seen anything saying matched pairs required, but I'm paranoid about buying the wrong thing. TIA!

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? If its a signle channel motherboard then no you dont need pairs. Also lot of times to really dont need matching pairs to run dual channel but its best to.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? No, you don't have to install matched sets. However, matched sets provide better performance in most cases. Also , you are not limited to pc2100. You can use pc2700 or pc3200. But I wouldn't buy one 2700 or 3200 to go with the 2100, although it might work. Memory is pretty cheap these days, so i'd get a matched set or just get two single stix of the same density. HTH

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? The 845 chipset supports max of pc2100 so anything faster he buys will just run at the 2100 speed.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? Thanks guys - it is a single channel mobo. I'll probably grab a single 512 then and try it in combination with one of the current 128MB sticks. If it doesn't work I'll pull the 128.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? See why I've been a member since 2001 and don't have the posts to show for it. Anyway, I was just letting him know he didn't only have to use pc2100. He might go to his local PC store and they don't have any 2100.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? Thats correct but need to mention that any higher speed memory would default to the fastest speed the motherboard supports. Your doing good keep up the work.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? Yes, you can purchase PC2700 and PC3200 memory and use it in a board rated for PC2100. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure the memory you are putting into the system can run the timings that are programmed in the SPD at the default JEDEC voltage. If it requires a bump in voltage to run the timings programmed in the SPD for PC2100 you won't be able to use the memory because you cannot adjust the voltage in the BIOS on a Dell system. The voltage is 2.5V BTW.

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? Just for the heck of it I went to the Crucial website and used the memory upgrade tool for a Dell 4400. They only list 2700 and 3200 for an upgrade! WTH

| Re: DDR sticks - install in pairs required? This is fine, and you would likely have to pay through the nose for true PC2100 anyways.
