| Re: HDD crash? I don't preferably think its the pirated OS you have installed, although it could be reading wrong and making huge skips on the disk. Just a thought. Heres a diagram: Last edited by jaketerminate : 05-16-2008 at 01:16 PM. |

| Re: HDD crash? Ok well I downloaded the Seagate Diagnose tool and after it runs it says: No Hard Drives found So I am assuming that my hard drive is fried? Before I buy a new one does anyone have any idea what may have caused this problem? I just want to make sure before I purchase a new hard drive because I don't want the same problem occurring again. My hard drive was only about 5 months old but I would RARELY restart my computer or turn it off for that matter. Could this be the reason why my hard drive fried? |

| Re: HDD crash? That's a pretty good bet. If you get that error message that says the electronics ( Bios being a part) is history. The diagnostics bypass the system bios. The BIOS I talk about is the bios on the harddrive. Other than the posted MTBF rates there's no guaranty your will achieve the same results. Some drives go longer and then some go less. I assume you can use the warranty to get a new drive.

| Re: HDD crash? Everyone should understand that hard drive mtbf's are extremely misleading. For instance, the recent WD Enterprise drives are rated at 1.2 million hours mtbf, which is 137 years. In reality, they will only last for a tiny fraction of that time. The numbers in the following explanation are just for purposes of explanation, and are not representative of the numbers for any actual drives. What the manufacturers do is to run say 100 drives for 1 year, find that 1 has failed, and declare the mtbf to be 100 years. The problem with that is that the failure rate is not constant as the drives age. After say 5 or 10 years, most or all of the drives will fail due to mechanical components wearing out. Also, a disproportionate number of drives fail very early (either doa, or within a few months), due to manufacturing defects or various infant mortality failure modes, or rough handling during shipping. As Mark Twain once said, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics! Regards, -- Al
