Memory Voltage and timings issue

i have 2GB corsair twinx-2048-PC6400 (matched pair) ddr2 800mhz ram and it comes with a second profile set @ 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V default is 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8v. anyway when i set the bios to use the second profile the pc will not boot. the ram itself according to corsair was tested and confirmed to work at said timings. it does boot @ lower volatges so far up to 1.96 and is stable. kinda curious why it wont boot @ 2.1.

My motherboard is an intel D975XBX2 and from i have read it should support the second profile. im not really sure what the deal is. any help is welcomed

Re: Memory Voltage and timings issue

Excessive ground bounce maybe... LOL! Total system noise floor is beyond the control of the memory manufacturer...

Re: Memory Voltage and timings issue

Check the manual or with Intel to see if that MOBO offers any OCing options in the bios. If not, you cannot change these settings. If you have an ongoing issue, it's best to start your own thread since this thread deals with a different MOBO, chipset, memory, different issue, etc etc.

actually , no i havent figured it out yet. tried different bios versions, tried with only modified ram timings and all other settings @ default. seems as though the max voltage i can boot with at the lower timings is 1.96v. dont know what i am missing

Re: Memory Voltage and timings issue

I've got the same D975XBX2 motherboard, and it would really help to know what bios revision you are running. I'm running bios revision 2831, and I can set the memory voltage to 2.1 volts for my memory if need be and still boot.

It could be possible, that the memory let you go beyond 1.96 volts. I would just set the memory to 1.96 volts and use the lower timings and be done with it, rather than worrying, and end up with a lot of headaches in the end.

i have the same revision as you. But have still not been able to boot @ 2.1V. I have it set at the lower timings @ 1.96V so im not really worried about it. just curious thats all. just trying to get the maximum amount of performance i can.

Re: Memory Voltage and timings issue

How do you know the board is delivering the voltage it says in the BIOS anyway? I've often found that I need to increase or decrease the vdimm slightly to get stability... I've had this happen on various vendors boards over the years...
so that 2.1 may in reality be more or less... for all we know...

In that case, I wouldn't worry as long as the memory is working fine and stable, with it's EPP timings as it is more commonly known at 1.96 Volts.

The memory I have, which is seen in my signature from Mushkin, runs fine and is stable with the EPP timings at the default voltage of 1.8 volts.

Re: Memory Voltage and timings issue

hey some good news, i rolled back the bios and then re-flashed it with the current revision and bam boots fine @ 2.1V. not sure why the first bios update didnt go so well, i did not get any errors when i updated it the first time. but all is well now.
