I recently installed Norton Systemworks Pro on my system, and every time I run the Norton Utilities memory test, the test fails. The address # that the failure occurs at is the same every time I run the test, until I restart my pc. Then, the test will fail at a new address, and continue to fail at that same address, until I restart, etc. I tried swapping the positions of the dimms; same result. I'm using two 256mb cas3 sticks that were installed in my system by the company who built it for me, Monarch computers. They said that they're OEM sticks that have infineon chips in them. My system runs fine, with no problems at all. It's a WOA board with a PIII 800EB and win98SE.
Should I be concerned about this if I'm not experiencing any problems? I use the system for pro audio applications, and the idea of malfunctioning or incompatible memory causing tiny glitches that I may not notice right away in my recordings is unsettling to me.
I also ran a memory tester called memtest86 v2.5, and it found no errors.

I would like to hear your opinions of the accuracy Norton memory test as well as memtest86. I would also appreciate any suggestions you might have.

SOME of the Norton Utilities have had problems with this chipset. You might want to check into upgrading the Norton drivers...also wouldn't hurt to give them a call.

this program doesn't recognize over 256MB, norton says it's a known issue and the program will fail and they're working on it

That's reassuring. Do you guys use any memory diagnostic programs?

That's the one I mentioned in my original post, and my system passed it ok. Should I be confident that the RAM is ok unless I start having problems?

yeah, what I usually do is start that SGI test before I go to bed, and in the morning it will have made a few passes through all its tests. If there are no errors listed in the bottom of the screen then I'm pretty confident the memory is good. That SGI test seems pretty well designed, I trust it.

I Have 2x 256MB doble sided working on 3-3-3 but they can't work toghether with the CUSL2. I tried both stand alone and they work fine and the NORTON MEMORY TEST works fine with boths RAMS when they work ALONE but when I tried the 2 RAMS toghether my WIN98SE start to receive blue screens, VXD errors, and so on...and the NORTON SYSTEMS WORKS MEMORY TEST fails the TEST. I think I have to change the RAMS to other brand until I find one that WORKS on the CUL2. I tested this RAMs on other MB non ASUS and they work togheter very well!

Just think maybe this help all you guys that have problem with 2x 256MB RAM on the CUSL2 ASUS Series Motherboards!

Cheers!

you obviously didn't read this whole thread. The Norton test DOES NOT WORK properly with over 256MB of ram installed. As for your problems with both sticks installed there is another possible solution. With one stick in, open up system.ini and find the [vcache] heading, and underneath it add this line:

MaxFileCache=131072

and save it. Shutdown, put the other stick in so you have 512MB installed again, and boot up again. Ten bucks says you will have no problems after that.

I will try this..but i don't think this is a SOLUTION because when i tried to install WIN98SE on the blank DISK with the PC with 512MB RAM ...I couldn't installed to the END because always have get some blue screens and so on...

I say that if I have problem when I start to install win98SE from the begginig this is not good...so I better change my RAMS to others RAMs ..I want to have my PC working 100% WELL!
Cheers!

win9x has a problem with large amounts of ram, one acknowledged and entered in their online knowledge base. The vcache thing I told you to try is the solution they give. Trust me. It is a valid solution, and I've already used it before and it does indeed fix the problem. There is, of course, a chance your ram doesn't get along in the motherboard, but I'd say this vcache business is a more likely cause.

Shortly thank you for the help, but indeed I tried yesterday all the posible combinations about that VCACHE on Win98SE ....and is not the issue man. The Asus CUSL2 don't accept the 2x 256MB RAM working toghether I don't know why, but is a fact..
The only thing that bothers me is that the RAM works very good and toghether on other PCs I have tried. I even try to install Win2000 on my machine to see if is a problem of win98se but is NOT! With 512MB of RAM I couldn't even start to copy the files of Win2000. Later on I take off one DIMM and with 256MB of RAM Windows2000 completly have finished the installation.

So I need help to see wich RAMs I need to be sure it works with the ASUS CUSL2?? Any special branchs?

I guess you've definitely got some ram that the cusl2 doesn't like then. I installed some Crucial pc133 cas2 sticks for a friend in his cusl2 and they're working fine after limiting vcache.
