Exclamation Overclockability issues - settings, drivers, bios?

I'm having real problems finding a stable set up with my p3-700 on a cusl2-c. Here are my issues: I can run 700-924 stable on the 100:100:33 settings for fsb and memory, however, I can't run a lot of the higher bus speeds period until my machine has been on for a minute or two. If I try to cold boot @ 900 say, I won't be able to post. However once I've sat around in the bios for about a min it will not only post, but run @900 just fine. While it seems stable, it's not rock solid, as on the rarest of occasions I will hard lock out of the blue, even though I've never seen the cpu temp hit over 40 in asus monitor. Something of note: when I can't post, my cd-rom will sit and click over and over, which makes me suspect my PCI bus. If someone knows the magic solution I would be greatful:

My specs:

p3-700 cc0
asus cusl2-c no onboard anything - bios rev. 1003
generic pc133 ram
maxtor 20.4 gig ide
generic 36x cd-rom
hercules geforce ddr
sb live value
generic pci 10 mbit ethernet
300watt Deer PS

I would agree with Skull on the need for better ram. I wouldn't agree that it's Mushkin or Crucial....no exception! I'm running Mosel Vitelic and my 700 is at 1015. Pick a name brand of ram, buy their good quality and replace your "generic" stuff. Mushkin, Crucial, Mosel, Corsair, Infineon, Shikatronics, etc. all make good ram.

I hear ya garnet, I may of went a wee bit to far in that statement! I did edit that post! But and thats a big fat but, Mushkin and Crucial are the best for oc'ing the cusl2 or c. The forum alone will tell you that! I've used some of the others and could not get the stability or as high of FSB as with Mushkin and Crucial. I have Mosel Vitelic and its in a machine that I don't oc very high. So for me there is no exception!

Hey Skull

I'm curious...how high have you had your Crucial vs. the Mushkin?

I have my Crucial stick in my CUSL2 and the Mushkin in my Iwill.
I know MY Mushkin will do 162 really well and 164 if I'm lucky.
I haven't upped the juice to the memory (well, ok, 1 bump) as I remember the Mushkin not liking it.
I'm thinking of switching them around to see how it works - but as you know - my Iwill can crank the FSB's.

My CUSL2 only runs @ 133 with an E cpu and Raid so it really doesn't matter for that one...

EDIT: Sorry - my bad - should have taken this to the memory section.
Just looked like a good opportunity...

Talking

On the cusl2 the Crucial will do 159-160, @ 160 no games, 159 fsb is stable. The Mushkin is stable @ 155 and can get into windows @ 160 fsb. I have the Crucial in the Tbird box 1.33 @ 1507mhz. The mushkin in the cusl2 box 866eb @ 1001mhz right now. My Mushkin seems a wee bit weaker then others on the forum! ('')

Thank you Skull

I may have to switch them and see for myself. I think the Crucial may run a wee bit faster as my memory scores improved when I put it in the CUSL2...only one way to find out...

palindromic

Sorry to jump in like that, but maybe that gave you some info too.
Skull and I have been pushing this board and a couple others...

I would try some good quality memory - you won't regret it. It's so cheap these days you can't afford lower quality. Get yourself a stick of 256 - if you still have problems post up and we'll help you...

Since this turned into a memory thread I'm going to move it over...

Skull

One of my sweet spots is at 158 - that's why I've been wondering about putting the Crucial in...I wasn't sure if it could do it. Not really interested in much higher - an occasional benchmark is all - too much stress - on me!

Cool

Yeah Skull & Ozzie. Take their advice. Take off that Generic Ram and deal no more, get Mushkin, Crucial, or Corsair. These are very reputable companies in memory industry. Just never use generic or never use that OCZ liar products anymore, do not be tempted by their lower prices. Don't tell us that you have not been warned before !!!.

Ozzie, can you post here when you install that Crucial in your Iwill. I wanna know how high (FSB) it can get on AMD based mobo & system. Well, Crucial is respectable with lower price, you know.

Folks, let's wait for a week or two, and most likely prices of all SDRAM, I guess including Major Brand like Mushkin, Crucial, Corsair, etc., will be reduced again. This is because Crucial has reduced the price of their 256MB DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64 CT3264Z265 significantly at only $65.69 when buying online. Check it out: http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpe...ule=CT3264Z265
It was reported 3 weeks ago the price is at $90 by this site: www.viahardware.com

This might drive the price of SDRAM lower, at least I hope it will happen, cause I am considering buying more SDRAM. At this time there is no real stable DDR mobo, without any bugs. So, SDRAM mobo is still good.

That's why, do not settle for Generic SDRAM that will cause you unexpected things to happen. Get a major one.

Damn, I have just post my last reply, and when I check the memory for CUSL2, I found out that Crucial 256MB SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 7.5ns • 3.3V • 32Meg x 64 CT32M64S4D7E has been reduced to $67.49 when buying online. Check it out at: http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...CUSL2&x=7&y=13

I was looking for another 256MB, and about 2 days ago the price of this Crucial was $83.99 and now it is only $67.49. It 's been reduced at almost 20%. Man, sounds good. I wonder, how Mushkin will react on this. Better wait for another weekend then.

Cool

And when I check at www.mushkin.com at about 04:30 AM (Morning Eastern USA Time), I cannot get into Mushkin web, it says this:

Our apologies, the website is down for maintenance until approximately

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7:00 AM (MST) Sunday May 27th

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess and hope they are upgrading their memories prices to lower one Yes, I am going to get one more 256MB stick. Just wondering whether it is gonna be that Crucial or Mushkin Rev2 or 3 ?? That Crucial prices are so tempting............lol

Ozzie, if 158 is your sweet spot, then Crucial may do it. I get 159 on the cusl2 mobo, stable, with Crucial.
