P4C800 Deluxe and RAM Suggestions?

Greets,

I am still running my trustworthy P4C800 [well ... Penrym hasn't come out yet, has it ] and wanted to toss some new DDR memory sticks in. Currently I am running 4 x 512MB on my XP box, and I would like to pump that up.

I know that I need PC3200 for the P4C800, but have 3 questions:

1) Can I buy faster than PC3200 (e.g., PC4000) or is that a waste?
2) Can someone recommend a current RAM solution (I think I want to avoid value ram)
3) Can I run more than 2GB of RAM under XP?

Thanks!

Really isnt a need for faster ram then pc3200 unless you overclock. Xp 32bit can handle 4gb but you need to tweak xp for it to work right.

OK - can someone recommend a compatible, reliable RAM module?

Thanks ... that's # 1 and # 3.

Anyone have any idea or recommendation on # 2?

Well if your going to be upgrading to a new intel system there isnt a real need to buy high end DDR1 memory. Value ram works real good and should be fine for your needs.

Does this look good?

re the upgrade - yes, but I rotate the computers down. Once this gets rotated down, my CUSL2C will get retired.

Anyone have any thoughts about?

I'm a Corsair fan myself. I have 2GB of their TWINX2048-3200C2PT running in my P4C800 Deluxe with no problems. This is CAS2 memory, so you can manually set your timings to 2-3-3-6-8. The price has never been better and there is a $40 rebate good until 5/31. Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2PT 2GB Kit DDR400 XMS3200 Memory Retail at ZipZoomfly

I am running the Ballistix stuff on my PC-DL and I have got it to run 2-2-2-5 for a short while. I like it a lot.

I too am running a P4P800 deluxe (or whatever it's called, in my prof somewhere), with 4x512 sticks running in dual channels. Corsair said it wouldn't be possible with four sticks, but with proper settings, I got it running, and running tight too.

I don't think you can go over 2 Gigs with this mobo though. I could be wrong. Other than that, 2 sticks will be faster than 1, but by how much I do not know.

jdmba -

What are you using to cool your Northbridge?

I have my OCZ at 2-2-2-5 which is actually surprising to the OCZ people. Good stuff the OCZ RAM.

As indicated above, if you are not going to overclock go with PC3200. If you intend to overclock, the answer is more complex. During the months after this board was introduced, there were anecdotal indications in many posts that for best stable overclocking performance the memory and cpu clocks should be 1:1 in frequency (nominally 200 mHz, corresponding to DDR400/PC3200, times the overclocking factor). I have found that to be true myself, having experimented extensively with both Corsair TwinX PC3200LL low latency and OCZ PC3700 Gold Edition Rev. 2 RAM on my P4C800 Deluxe. If you may ever be overclocking, what you should do is to research others' experiences to get a rough idea of the maximum FSB speed your CPU can be expected to overclock to, then multiply by 16, and try to purchase PCxxxx RAM where xxxx is close to that result.

In my case, using a P4 2.8C (which is not a particularly great overclocker), I achieved a maximum stable overclock of 3.14 gHz (FSB 224 MHz) running 5:4 with the Corsair PC3200LL, and 3.25 gHz (FSB 232 MHz) running 1:1 with the OCZ PC3700.

You may want to consider buying these or similar memories on eBay, observing the usual precautions such as checking seller feedback, etc. I got an excellent bargain on the OCZ there, a few months ago.

Good luck, -- Al

Hey JDMBA,

Looks like your choice of my motherboards has been very similar to mine over the years! I use PC4200 OCZ RAM on my P4C800-E Deluxe 1:1. My 2.4 chip has been at 270 FSB for over two years without a single problem. I've also used a small fan on my NB to keep things stable.

Your choice of RAM should largely be based on which CPU you use and how high (if at all) you want (and are able) to overclock that CPU.

One particular RAM type you DO NOT want to use on your board is Kingston HyperX DDR500. I had a pair of 512MB sticks that gave endless trouble with the graphics on my system and even after two replacement pairs the problems just never went away, so I switched to OCZ.

I'd say if you're not going to overclock much then any "name brand" DDR400 will do fine.
