P4S533 1024mb memory no go.

Hi there, newbie here. Can anyone help?
Got an Asus P4S 533. Till now had 512mb PC2100 cl.2 from Apacer running fine. Got another stick exactly the same the other week and tried to fit it yesterday then the problems started. I just get a "Failed memory test" message from the mobo and no boot.

Individually both memory sticks work in any of the slots but as soon as I insert both (in any combination of slots) it wont take it.

Seems as if my mobo. wont take 1024mb unless thereīs some bios or jumper setting Iīve not yet found. I did try changeing the jumper setting for memory voltage but as expected didnīt help.

Grateful for any help as I dont expect the supplier will take it back because I got it over three weeks ago.

Thankx.

What's the rest of your spec's? Operating system? You can't run a gig of mem on Win 98 for instance( I'm running WinXp pro SP2). And how have you got it all set up? It may not be the memory causing the failure. I've been running mine (P4S533, 1st rev.,bios 1011.05 beta) for over a year with no problems. I run "jumper free" mode, default voltages, CPU on manual @ 148 FSB = 2.81, memory is Mushkin 2700 HP rev.2, 2X512's on manual 5/4,2226 timings.(This yields best bench and game results but, it runs fine set at SPD 1/1 but slower)

Reread the MB manual carefully. It's still on ASUS' site if you don't have yours. You should (if you run WinXP or Win2000) be able to run a gig (2/512's, it doesn't like the 3rd slot occupied)at a variety of settings with no prob's.
After all this, if it's still a no go, you could take back the new module to save a little $(Tell them the truth, they may replace both with another pair for you) and get 2 512's of Mushkin or some other higher end memory and give it another go. From what I've read of people's problems with "adding memory" later, I always decide on how much I need and get it all when I build. That way you are more likely to get "matched modules". Memory mfr's don't make their own chips, just their own PCB's and they will change chips when they run out and you can't tell cause they don't change part #'s. I always use Mushkin. They may not be the best but, they always buy the MB's and test all their memory on them and make recommendations on which will run the best, fastest, most stable, etc. That takes the worry out of it. Never had a memory problem with their's cause of this. When I want to build a system I go to their site and look at their memory qualification page to see which MB's and mem's are running the best. It takes the worry out of MB decisions too. Great site.

Are your DIMMs DS or SS? I recall a problem with the P4S533 using double sided DIMMs, esp for OC. I used a Gigs worth of memory at one time with the board, but used 2x256 SS PC2700 and 1x512 DS DIMM by Samsung. My config was more stable with no OC and it always booted to Win2000 or XP. Currently running the P4S533 with Win2003 and 256MB of RAM (1x256 SS Samsung).

Which bios rev are you running? You may want to consider flashing to a newer bios.

Hope this helps.
