Question P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

I am building a P5B-D/E6600.
I got 2x1G Mushkin XP2-8500 from Newegg, but it threw errors in memtest 86+ at rated speed/timings/voltage. So, I sent it back to Newegg for an exchange. They received mine, but now they don't have the Mushkin in stock! I can get a different brand or my money back. They don't have the OCZ Platinum 8500 in stock either, but they do have the Crucial Ballistix 8500. The Crucial uses the D9 chips as well doesn't it? Would these work well on my P5B, or should I just get money back and order the Mushkin or OCZ elsewhere? I wish they had the Mushkin in stock.

I want to to be able to run the mem at the following speeds/timings/voltages:
800/4-4-3-10/2.15
1000/5-5-4-12/2.15-2.25
1066/5-5-4-12/2.25
I am not using active cooling on the sticks, so I don't want to go any higher than 2.25 on the voltage.

So, Mushkin, OCZ or Crucial?

p.s. If I choose to get my money back from Newegg, I can get the Crucial at Zip Zoom Fly for about $45 less than the Mushkin.

TIA.

Re: P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

As I recall, Micron, the parent company of Crucial, makes the D9 chips. Therefore, popular wisdom would indicate that the crucial RAM will have the best DDR2 chips and therefore the best available performance.

What about Kingston HyperX PC-8500. Stuff is high quality and stable...doesn't overclock ALOT...but you can squeeze it a bit. Kingston is the preferred memory for the P5B Board

Re: P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

Well, thanks for the input everyone.

I went with the Crucial Ballistix 8500 from Newegg. With a MIR, it ends up being $45 less than the Mushkin. Reviews seem to indicate it will do rated speed/timings at lower voltages than the Mushkin & OCZ. Hope it works well with my P5B. Fingers crossed.

Re: P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

Well, i got my Crucial Ballistix 8500 and I can't get these to run error free at their rated speed/timings/voltage either (1066/5-5-5-15/2.2v). Even tried up to 2.35v!
But, they are running error free, 3 passes so far, at 800/3-3-3-10/2.25v Not bad!
Maybe I have to raise the FSB and NB voltages to get them to run at 1066... will give that a try.

Re: P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

I finally got it to run at 1066/5-5-5-15/2.25v, by upping the NB voltage to 1.45! :-)
They also run at 1000/4-4-4-10/2.25v & 800/3-3-3-10/2.25v!

I don't have active cooling on the RAM, so for now, I am running them at 889/4-4-4-10/1.9v.

These sticks are pretty good! I think I'll keep 'em!

Re: P5B & 8500: Mushkin, OCZ or Ballistix?

Yeah Skully. Very happy with these sticks!

And, Newegg just lowered the price today to $129 + a $30 MIR & free shipping!!! I just ordered 2 more!

If anyone needs 2x1GB of good D9 8500 RAM, go get 'em while they got 'em for $99!!!
