Question Is it possible to mix 2*512mb and 2*256 on P4P800?

Hey all,

just tonight a friend of mine called me and asked a question I had no answer to. He is running a P4P800 non deluxe board with 2*256Mb of Kingston memory at SPD timings with no problems. But since he got a sweat deal on 2*512Mb of Apacer memory he want's to put all sticks in the board an run it with 1,5 Gb of memory. Now since this is a dual channel board he'll certainly have to couple both matching sizes on the same channel slots right? But will it work with the abovementioned configuration. Since I never used this config in my own carrier with the P4P800 I wasn't sure and thought why not ask it to the good folks at abx.

Hope some of you might help me, and offcourse my friend out on this one.

Greetz

Yes, it will work. It may not be optimal, but it should work. See the Intel white paper. Better yet, justy download the P4P800 manual and go to the memory configuration page for a full explanation of what is and is not acceptable.

Thx for the reply,

I'll let the guy know and see if he's able to get it to work. Seems to be it's logic, but you never know right. I do have a feeling I'll get a call tonight responding to my email, something allong the lines of :"Can you come over and help me install it?" and when ariving there I bet I'll have to do a complete reinstall of his system.

Now what are friends for?

Greetz and thx again

Thought I would let you all know for future reference!!! It works

As I suspected the guy called me and asked me to set up the whole system from scratch again ... I did a fresh XP install with only the to Kingston HyperX modules in place, made sure everything was in place and shut down the system. Made sure that timings where set by SPD in bios and shut down the whole thing. Pulled out the two HyperX modules and replaced them with the two Apacer 512mb modules. Bootet up tested the system a while and shut down again. Put in the HyperX in the second channel slots and vwola ... All works at spd timings from the apacer modules.
