Problems using two 512Mb chips A7V266-E

Using one 512Mb Apacer stick (Registered, ECC, CL2) runs fine at the lowest settings (2T-2T-2T-5T), but when I try running two of them......Windows won't boot at all. I have to raise CAS to 2.5 to make them work, even though SPD set it to 2....

Anything I should do to make this work? The jumper settings for voltage to the RAM are screwed up in the manual, so I have no idea what the actual voltage would be if I change them......

Could anybody shed some light on this please?

Merry Christmas,
Ray

I don't think Asus A7V266-E 100% supports Registered, ECC DDR memory. This is a usual symptomps when trying to install another Registered, ECC memory on the mobo that does not support it. Another symptom, you can boot but the system read it as using only 256MB

Hi.

on page 25 of the manual: DDR DIMM's support non-ECC memory.

meaning that the board does not support ecc mem.

Why do you use ECC-mem?

BTW welcome to the forum

Errrrr......I read that the board supported 3 gigs of registered RAM, so I went ahead and bought some. I didn't even see one single registered, none-ECC chip in in those webshops....There were ECC memory, not registered..but not the other way around. So how was I to know that there even existed registered none-ECC chips?
The memory run just fine at 2.5 though, and when I played a little bit around with the voltage jumpers, I could get it to run further into windows....so that's why I thought something was wrong with the voltage settings on this board. According to the manual, my jumpers were set to 2.8v...?

So I would actually have been better off buying cheaper RAM?
What kinda performance loss do I suffer from, running at 2.5 over 2?

Hey Mushkin.....go Ole Gunnar, go!

God Jul til Bergen!

Thanks,
Ray

Get 256MB (in one stick) Crucial PC2100 DDR, it can cope the voltage above 2.8V (I am running it on 3.2V DIMM) and it can go as high as FSB 174MHz at CAS 2 on my system!!!

Running at CAS 2.5 you would have less performance in Memory Benchmark. Most 3D softwares, either CAD or Games, and Multimedia programs use more on memory bandwith. So, you would run with less performance in those programs (less responsive).

Ya, go Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. I like that guy

Ray Ball,
before giving up try installing the sticks with various configurations. most boards seem to run best with two sticks when you put one in slot1 and the other in slot3. try that first if you haven't already. if it doesn't work then try 1 and 2 or 2 and 3. hopefully you get surprized and find that one of them works.

since the ecc dimm works at cas2 when you install only one, the board will support it so your problem must be linked to some other conflict or problem, possibly the voltage issue that was brought up earlier.

Ok i can't find REG non-ECC either.

And MR crucial is kinda hard to find in Norway. The one webshop that sold them seems to have vanished.

I finally found out that my board came set at 2.8v, so I'll try different voltages, and I'll definately try changing the slots. Thanks for the tip, and a very merry christmas to ya'll!
