RAM wont work!

RAM G-Tek 1gig RAM
184-pin DDR configuration
Double Inline Memory Module (DIMM)
Double Data Rate RAM (DDR)
Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
1.0 Gigabyte (1GB) / 1024 Megabyte (1024MB)
64x4 DRAM Configuration (Density x Organization)
266 MHz (DDR266)
PC2100 -- Bandwidth of 2.1 GB per second
Tested speeds of 7.5 Nanosecond (ns) or faster
CAS Latency 2.5 or 2.0 (CL 2.5 or CL2)
2.5 Volt (operates at over-clock voltages, however, this voids the warranty)
SSTL-2 I/O Interface for High Bandwidth Support
Non-ECC, Non-Registered, Non-Buffered, Non-Parity (Greatest compatibility with motherboards)
JEDEC compatible, AVL approved

I have a P4B266-E motherboard!
When i put this stick on DIMM 1 with no other DIMMS loaded, the computer will not boot, it just stays black. It is installed correctly and i dont know whats up. I get no POST warning as well.
I put my old ram 2x256megs sticks back in and looked at my BIOS and i am not sure what needs to be set (if any). i have turbo mode off and its set for normal mode.

I see you're running bios version 1002. Is there a newer bios that would help?

You may simply have a bad stick of ram!
This is a 1 gig stick if I understand correctly. Are you certain your board supports 1 gig sticks?

Yes, I knew that, but will it handle 1 gig sticks? Your manual will provide that info, as well as what slots hold which size sticks.

As garnet says, see if your motherboard is able to run one gig on one stick.

here is what the manual says:

"You may install any DDR DIMMS with 64mb, 128mb, 256mb, 512mb, and 1Gb densities into three DIMM sockets.

NOTE: Use only the following combinations to install DDR DIMMS. Otherwise, the system may not boot up.

DDR DIMM1
(Rows 0&1)

1. SS/DS
2. SS/DS

DDR DIMM2
(Rows 2&3)

1. DS
2. SS

DDR DIMM3
(Rows 3&2)

1. None
2. SS/None

DDR DIMM sockets 2 and 3 share the same rows, so if you install a double-sided DIMM into DIMM2 socket, you must leave DIMM3 socket empty. However, you may install single-sided DIMMs into DIMM2 and DIMM3 at the same time.

So why isnt this taking my 1gig stick? i removed my old 256meg sticks (both double sided) and put this 1gig stick in DIMM1 and didnt work. i even tried DIMM2 for fun and it didnt work.
i get a POST message saying the system is having trouble booting up because i overclocked the processor? My processor is still running at stock speed and i never clocked up the bus.

Boot with your ram that boots and set you timings below the spec of your 1 GB stick. For instance if your G-Tek stick says 2.5-3-3-6 set to 3-4-4-7 ect.... Also try bumping up your memory voltage a notch. If all that works you still might consider sending the module back because it will then be operating out of advertized specs. I've never heard of G-Tek ram, but then I don't get out much. Where did you buy it?

Your limits of 3 (Cas) should be ok, 7 (tRAS) probably ok, but 3-3 (tRCD-tRP) "might" be a problem if there is one in timings. Can you change your command rate? Your stock voltage should be ok as your spec for that ram is 2.5V as you said.

At least you know it's the ram.

Do you know what the published SPD timings are on the 1GB module?
