Searching for 4GB (2GB x2)

Well, I am in need of a tad bit of help. Been looking around for 4GB (2GB x 2) RAM chips. I am in the process of gathering the parts to build a Quadcore system with Vista 64Bit edition and wanted 6-8GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

I tend to stitch large panoramas and don't want to run out of memory anymore.

Having a bit of difficult located some of the more name brand of RAM... I keep hearing Patriot or Corsair RAM is the best choices?

Any suggestions as to where to look???

There is one caveat about your possible 8GB configuration that makes Specmike’s question very important. Actually the important question is not really the motherboard but what chipset is the motherboard going to be based on? Since you will be using 1Gb technology RAM and possibly installing all banks for a total of 8GB you will have one issue if it is the latter P965 core logic.

The P965 does not support full bank installations at 800MHz double data rate. Meaning it will drop to 667MHz if all banks are installed. The new P35 does not have this limitation. At least none is noted within the white papers.

My recommendation is to find a motherboard that is based on the P35 core logic and only supports DDR2, if possible. Intel does not validate the motherboards that support both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. It has to be one or the other even if the motherboard in question may be able to use both. Since you are using this more for what seems, to me, as workstation oriented work I recommend only one supported technology. I would also stick with JEDEC standards 1.8v and 5-5-5 timings for 800MHz.

Mushkin is very good and by some is considered better. I personally have 4GB installed in my system from Mushkin. I noticed that Geil has a 8GB kit at Newegg.

What are you doing that you need more then 4gb or ram? i have 4gb of ram in my pc and i never use more then 14% of it.

Newegg has a few 4gb and 8gb kits but they arent cheap.

Isn't it better to have 4 x 1g sticks then say 2 x 2g sticks? I thought there was a considerable increase in latency..

SRTDodge05, I too have never maxed out my 2g, running Vista even. Now the 1g on my lappy could use some company..

No, in fact it is more likely the opposite. More DIMMs = more latency. And, 2 DIMMs run cooler, use less power, etc......

I am a heavy Photoshop and digital photography user. I stitch very large panorama landscape shots and currently have 3GB on a WinXP Pro system and I run out of memory with the stitching.

With a 64bit Vista premium setup on my new system when i build it I wanted 6GB - 8GB of RAM so I don't have a problem with out of memory issues...

The files I work with are 70MB 16Bit TIFF files and I usually have to stitch 10-12 of them together...

Cool explanation, thanks. One reason I asked is that there are a LOT of anti-4gb internet personalities handing out advice these days. They frequently jump on people making statements like "no one needs 4gb of RAM" or "your OS can't use it" or asking "what or how could you possibly ever need that much memory"......blah....blah.....blah.

There are lots of people in the world that actually do NEED more than 2gb of RAM.

I am looking for the same 4GB (2GB x 2) RAM for the same reason (Photoshop/Digital Photography) for a new Q6600 system. I was looking at the Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 for an Asus P5K Deluxe/Wi-Fi or a Asus P5K-E/Wi-Fi but NewEgg just raised the price about $100 in the past two weeks ($259 to $359), and everyone else is backordered, and the Corsair website does not even list the 2x2 configuration anymore (and no reply from their customer support). So, is it Muskin -- 2x2 DDR2 800 -- for about $250? Granted, the new P35 motherboards are new, so it is difficult to figure out what will work well, but seems like 2x2 would work easier than 4x1. More concerned about stability and speed than overclocking, but enjoy a game now and then. Any advice appreciated on the best 2x2 RAM. Thx, PTB

Here's the Corsair part: http://www.corsairmemory.com/products/xms2_dhx.aspx

As for being in stock I would suggest Price Grabber, Price Watch, or a similiar engine to search.

Thanks, but only the QUAD (1x4) is listed for the 4GB memory size -- the other two listings are only 2GB (1x1). I see no listing for a Corsair 4GB (2x2), thus the mystery. It was there a few weeks ago. Chrs, PTB

Well, in talking to someone at Corsair yesterday by calling their tech support line. They said it is still in production, but has a relatively high demand for it...

The response i got was patience... Newegg is expecting on August 20 according to their site, but everyone else out totally out of stock...
