I have recently purchased a single 512MB memory stick, but the system only picks up 256MB.

I have an Intel P3/933 and the memory manufacturer is "Major" so if anyone knows if this is simply a limitation of the motherboard of if there is a setting/software/BIOS patch that I can change, then please advise.

Regards

yea, your right. I even went checked the asus site before I posted the original message. it says:

Equipped with three Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets to support PC100/PC133-compliant SDRAMs (available in 64, 128, 256MB) up to 512MB.

http://asus.com/products/Motherboard...2/feature.html

I don't know why they leave out that it supports the larger ram on their website.

No, you are totally wrong. The max capacity of supported memories with Intel 815 chipset series is max 512 MB PC133/100 NON-ECC SDRAM. It will work max @133 MHz on 4 banks, and will switch back to 100 MHz when the system sees more than 4 banks occupying the DIMMS, up to 6 banks.

1 side of memory counts as 1 bank. Check if your 1 stick of 512MB SDRAM is NON ECC. It must be Non ECC. In bios setting, try to run it using default "by SPD". Try under normal usage first (not overclock), just to check. Also, try to set up to ALL Banks & STRONG & try the combination.

Question

Many thanks Mushkin Rules....

....However I tried your seggestions, and unfortunately I still only get 256MB, regardless of how I change the BIOS configuration (STRONG/All Banks/SPD/Combination of all three).

The memory is definitely Non-ECC, and I have tried it in a QDI board, and this registers the whole 512MB. Is it simply a compatibility issue? The system is running perfectly stably with 256MN, so it isn't a faulty chip.

Any other suggestions are much appreciated.

Question

I would wonder whether in some fashion this particular 512M stick is non-compliant with the PC133 standards? Is it advertised or listed [e.g., on the label] as PC133 compliant?

nidon, what's the name of the chip in your memory? Also what brand is it (the memory)? Try running CTSPD to see the default specs.

max ram!

the way i see it
"PC100/PC133-compliant SDRAMs (available in 64, 128, 256MB) up to 512MB" i would say it can take 64 128 or 256 meg sims ...UP TO a max amount of 512

The chipset doesn't support x4 and x32 memory chip organisation, whatever it means. Arithmetically, 512 megs in 16 chips (8 per side) give 32 megs per chip, so I guess it's the case. It is only mentioned in the datasheet once and in a place most users won't read to (p.61 in the latest release)... Any experiences with 256 megs one-sided, anyone?
