Timming of 3-3-3-8 ? Why ?

Hi

I got my new computer friday, and i have a question about the speed ( my timming ) See my signature for my new spec !

My question is simple : Why would my memory be running at 3-3-3-8 when my P3 700Mhz (sold) would run (Stock) at 2-2-2-5 ??

I mean since the Pentium 3 , technology and all , i would expect better timming than 3-3-3-8, right ?

Would running at 2-2-2-5 kill my system ??
... Its not that i need that extra memory speed , my comp is fast as hell when compared to my P3 ...

Higher clock frequency means tighter timings are harder to reach... The time it takes for signals to propagate through a memory device is finite, and with memory chip density increasing, it will require more time also.

CAS2 at PC100 speed means 20ns.
CAS2 at PC3200 speed means 10ns.

There were never any CAS1 PC100 memory chips

Could I get 2-2-2-5 timming ?? Or lower than 3-3-3-8 ??

It doesnt matter if i cant, i wont be using all that memory intensive program .... that use faster timming .. .

You could try 2.5 3 3 7, but you may need to raise VDIMM to 2.75V. Run memtest86 to check for errors.

You could put 2-2-2-5, but your system might not bootup(happened to my system and had to clear cmos) or you will get errors when your system boots up.

I say go ahead and try it. Just make sure you back up all your important stuff. Then what you do is set it @ 2-2-2-5 and see if it post. If it post, let it run into windows or see how far it goes.

Always remember, when overclocking, its better to set your system up using NTFS as opposed to FAT32. FAT32 is unforgiving. You could scramble your OS and have to reinstall in a split second. But with NTFS, you will have more than one opportunity to screw up..

Because that's what it's designed to run at. I would bet it won't run at even close to 2.2.2.5. It'd be like trying to race a VW Beetle at Corvette speeds.

If it's working fine then leave it alone. If you just can't keep from messing with it, then do a lot of reading FIRST so you understand how everything works and what the consequences are. There are lots of things that you can screw up, that are very hard to unscrew.
