Very High Page File Usage

The last couple days my PF usage on my pc has been over 1gb sumtimes close to 2gb's w/o any programs running other than aim, msn messenger, and media player 11. Normally, with all of these programs running my pc always stays below 300mb's. But the pc doesnt lag or anything at all and I only have 768mbs(333mghz) of ram installed. The CPU usage stays below 50% most of the time. Why is the pc using so much memory with little or no programs running and doesnt lag a bit? my processor isnt a high end one either, its a sempron 2.1 that I managed to overclock months ago to 2.4. I recently replaced the thermal paste with Dynex on the cpu, ive read that Dynex is a scam b.c thiers no silver in it whatsoever, just a silver colored silicone base. Could my pc be overheating?

I doubt that overheating would increase your page file usage. One thing to do is go into task manager and add the column VM size, and see what if there is a process that might have a memory leak or high page file usage.

Reboot your computer and immediately go to your task manager and look at your memory usage. Take a screenshot and then let the computer sit unused for an hour or 2. Then, compare your screenie to your current memory usage.

@snoopinc and redrum781, while throwing money at something is an option, it is far from the right thing to do in this case. If your memory usage goes up and your usage pattern doesn't change, then something else is causing issues. If you are going to give a response, give a reason why doing something will benefit the situation. It contributes to everyone's understanding and shows that a person is thinking about the response and not just throwing out answers.

@luigi99, please do the following and see if your page file usage patterns come down:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/en-us

I am assuming that you are using Windows XP.

This will disable all non-microsoft applications from loading at start-up. Then we can see if something is loading with your system that could be causing it to slow down. This will not affect some spyware and viruses that use craftier means to load at start-up, but it will give us a starting point.

Also, have any recent updates gone through that you know of? Do you recall installing any additional software recently? Some software that shows itself as freeware attaches other software that also gets installed and can cause slow performance.

FWIW - If I remember correctly, once I had a similar problem. Seems I had some super bad spyware. After two or three rounds of Ad-Aware and CCleaner. Usage went down to normal.

Believe I picked the spyware up from some registry cleaner site.

If your computer was running OK before and you didn't install any new software, you've probably got some kind of spyware. Better to invest in some free spyware removal software like Adaware or Spybot before you buy new hardware.

Very true. Or if it is feasible, do a complete format and reinstall. And, as you install your old software, watch the memory and page file usage. I don't trust Windows after a spyware infestation so in the past, when I have had issues, I reformatted and did a clean install.
