Smile What to do?

Hi,

This is my first post here so please bear with me. Right now I have an Intel 815EEA Motherboard with on board lan. Two days ago I ordered my 2nd piece of 128mb Rev 2 Ram. So now I have 256mb. After having this for a couple of days I find myself very limited with the things I can do to my comp as far as tweaking and getting as much performance as possible out of it. My first piece of mushkin rev 2 ram had the spd programmed to do 3-3-3 (which i just found it from this board and from a call to mushkin )and was on the old green PCB. My new one is on Black PCB and is low profile and is programmed 2-2-2, but with Intel's lack of bios options i guess it reverts back to CAS 3 because of the other chip. So here's where i stand now, I really would like to get rid of my Intel Mobo and get an Asus Cusl2. This is where you guys come in. I want to get an Asus board but i think there are a couple of ones and I saw that there was a pearl or something. If someone could explain that to me what the different ones are id appreciate it. I don't need any onboard video, nor onboard audio. Also, will the bios in the asus allow me to bypass the spd on that one chip so that it will run 2-2-2 since that is what its rated at? Or would you advise me just to sell the ram and get a stick of 256 Crucial Cas 2 to go with my new board? please offer some opinions. Thank you very much.

Thumbs up

If your going for a 815 board from Asus

there is the
CUSL2 Has onboard video

Cusl2-C no onboard video
AGP pro slot 6 PCI 3 DIMM Slots

Black Pearl Based on the 815
this is a specialilty board kinda of thier salute to
the 815 chipset nothing special.

The new 815 boards

Tusl2
Tusl2-c
there are a couple more models not sure what they are
these boards should be on sale very soon if not already.

Are made to support the new Tutalin PIII CPU's
but will work with the Coppermine PIII's and Celerons II's also
I think the TUSL2 has a onboard RAID controller not sure on that
one.I have the CUSL2 board I don't use the onboard video
I find it to be rock stable in everything

And yes you can set the memory manually in all the board I listed
as long as your memory can handle the faster timings the board will do the rest.If you plan to overclock the board have great features for that as well.

Hope this helps

1 stick 256MB Mushkin Rev 2 (Infineon chip) is better than 1 stick 128 MB Rev 2 (Mosel Vitelic chip). The 1 stick 256 MB Rev 2 can overclock higher. If you like, since you just bought your 128 Rev 2, return it and get the 1 stick 256MB Rev 2. It depends on how high FSB overclocking are you looking. But, yes, you can set the Memory timing manually, instead of SPD detection, in the bios using CUSL2 & TUSL2 series mobo.

For CUSL2 and TUSL2 series mobo see here:
CUSL2: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Moth...sl2/index.html

CUSL2-C: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Moth...2-c/index.html

CUSL2-C Black Pearl: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Moth..._bp/index.html

TUSL2: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Moth...sl2/index.html

TUSL2-C: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Moth...2-c/index.html

CUSL2 has on board VGA, whereas CUSL2-C & CUSL2-C Black Pearl (Black PCB) does not have onboard VGA. ALL come with optional onboard Audio. You have to specify that you don't want mobo with onboard Audio, usually the one without onboard Audio is specified as WOA (Without Audio)

Welcome to the forum Verbal.

I agree with MR on the 256MB Rev2. See if they will let you exchange it. The Mushkin Rev2 will do better than Crucial for overclocking!

Hey MR... did I hear somebody say "Mushkin Rules"?

Yes a CUSL2 or C will let you set the memory timings at CAS2 whatever the module`s SPD is programmed to.
Hmm,early rev2 128Mb modules may run at 133 CAS2 but not sure how much more memory bus at CAS2
Buy first the mobo, then see if you need a mem upgrade-Rev2 256 or rev3(128) is a good choise.

Tell me about it Pman! I paid $167 U.S. back in March for my 256MB stick of Rev2. Last time I checked they were selling for $119. It was still worth it though. No problems ever due to my RAM!
