What happens to the Northbridge when you run 4 sticks of RAM?

I've heard when you run 4 sticks of RAM that the Northbridge works harder and heats up more.

How much harder does it work? All the time? Or only when your playing memory intensive games?

How much hotter does it get? Will the normal case air flow cool it? Will the overhang from my Zalman CNPS7000 on the CPU cool it? I would think that the downflow from the Zalman has got to send air through the Northbridge heatsink cooling fins.

Since the bus load doubles, it takes more power to transmit over the bus. So over time, average power usage goes up. The chipset's designed for that, though, so whether there's two or four sticks in use doesn't really matter as far as wear and tear goes. It's all calculated to last, that goes for the cooling solution too. With normal case airflow, there shouldn't be any need to worry.

If it was my system, and based on my P4C800 series boards, I would at a minimum put a fan directly on the NB sink. And, definitely do so if you are OCing. In the past, I used a small drop of silicone adhesive and glued a 40mm fan on the sink.

Here is a diagram of the air flow -

http://www.zalman.co.kr/usa/product/...?idx=277&code=

Look about halfway down the page and also look at item #6 below.

So what do you think?

Unless you have a virtual wind tunnel, I would suggest a dedicated fan on the NB or an aftermarket cooler. With 4 DIMMs and esp when OCing 4 DIMMs they get VERY hot.

I love those marketing diagrams. They should color the arrows red to make it more realistic tho, red as in hot air.

Those arrows aren't air flow. They are the straps to tie the fan and heat sink down to the board lol.

Yeah. I was smiling too at that marketing technique.

And with the silicone the fan was still removable and replaceable if it fails and needs to be replaced? Any other way to attach it?

Yes, it peels off easily and that is why I used that method. It won't be permanent on the NB if you ever need to RMA the board. I supposed you could use a zip tie or something else.
