What memory for Conroe?

Like many, I plan on pulling the trigger on a Conroe here shortly, and I need advice. I'm not looking to do any extreme overclocking, maybe just a 5 or 10% bump over stock. I'd like to run 2 gigs (a matched pair of 2x 1G chips) of memory. The E6700 (2.67GHz) runs @ 1000 FSB, right? If that's the case PC 5400 would do ok then? From my research, when you go much faster than 5400, the matched pairs are generally 2 x 512mb sets, and the price begins to get pretty steep. Any help or insight appreciated.

Edit: I was looking at this for memory:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145015

Almost, the E6700 runs on a 266MHz FSB. But to answer your question, yes PC5400 will do you fine, as it will run at 333MHz natively. The bare minimum for 1:1 is PC4200.

So 5400 would be required to run the 1333Mhz versions of Conroe, correct?

As slated right now the only 1333MHz FSB Conroe is only the Core 2 Extreme. So unless you are planning on investing in the $1000 processor, I would find the ram that gives the tightest timings for the speed, whether PC4200 or PC5300

No, my pockets aren't deep enough for the Conroe EE. I was just hoping to be able to recycle this ram for possible future use. Thanks for the help.

Might be late but: You will want PC6400 memory.
PC5400 at very lowest.

Conroe chipset (965P) support Native DDR2-800 and have much improved memory bus. Core 2 Duo don't perform well with anything lower than 1:1

I ordered 2 gigs of Corsair PC6400, so hopefully it'll do for what I want. Now if the CPU and Board were available

I've got my eye on the Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...S2_Memory.html

Luckily(?) my Ballistix died last week and after a bit of whinging got a full refund as they couldn't give me exact replacements within the timeframe I needed them for, so I'm flea-baying the FX55, DFI Expert and GTX to do a new Conroe build with a 7950GX2.

You're a gentleman.

Thanks.

I'm still ****** at Intel about the 955 chipset as I puposely spent more than I needed to (on say the 925 chipset) so that I'd have something Conroe compatible.
Although the 955 chipset doesn't come up in many conversations (it's all 945 or 975) all indications are that it won't be Conroe compatible.
At least my 2GB (Kingston) of 667Mhz DDR2 can be used - so CPU & motherboard but that 955 purchase is annoying the hell out of me.

955 is being dropped for the 975 chipset and I beleive that 945 will be replaced by 965 as for the mainstream with 945 in the low end. Actually the main reason for Conroe not working in current motherboards is that a new VRM is needed for Conroe, which the specs of the VRM was nnot finalized until much later.

I've been researching quite a bit as well and am wondering why most people are going with the 800MHz PC6400 when the Conroe runs a 1066MHz FSB? I'm looking at the C2D E6420 with some Corsair 2x1GB PC8500 RAM. I don't plan to overclock at all. Wouldn't PC8500 run 1:1 with the E6420??? Is 1066 RAM just too expensive for the performance gain? I'm confused.
