You need to provide more detail. Why an additional controller (promise)? Hard drive? Other hardware? bios version? Did you install the chipset drivers ritght after 98 installation?
You can reinsatll w2k as a dual boot system since you have now installed 98.

You your PC100 memory.

Is your system running at 100 Mhz FSB, or are you trying to over clock that slow memory?

If your running PC100 at PC133 speeds, you could be causing your lockups, right there!

but correctly me if I'm wrong, in CUSL2 you can run RAM at 100 and CPU at 133. So thats not the problem.

Too many sides on you RAM sticks?
The 815 chipset "likes" three or less.

Remove some RAM and see if the lockups continue.

Just a thought.

Hi

I agree with DaveM. You are using pc100 and although the CUSL2 officially accepts it, its very picky about the quality of memory and it will often reject top brands of pc 133, such as Corsair, so perhaps you might want to think about moving up to pc 133?

Cheers

Tam

Correction

I mistated my intention, you can run memory at 100 Mhz with a FSB of 133 Mhz.

What I really meant to ask/say was:

Are you running the Memory at a speed higher than the rated 100Mhz?
If you are running the memory faster than it's rated speed, all sorts of problems can show up. Including Lockups or random reboots and even hidden data corruption on your hard drives or other recordable media.

". . .it will often reject top brands of pc 133, such as Corsair, . . ."

Really, who has had trouble with Corsair?

Just curious. I'm running two sticks of CAS2 Corsair (256 MB) and have had absolutely zero problems with it.

Hi Harrym

I would have to read all the posts but I remember reading several people who had problems with top brands and the consensus is that the CUSL2 is very picky. I've been here since almost the inception of CUSL2.com, and beleive me its true.

I think most of those posts you'll find on the old message board, which I don't even know how to access.

But if I mis-spoke then please accept my apologies.

Tam

Talking

". . .consensus is that the CUSL2 is very picky."

Agreed, top shelf RAM seems to be the least likely to cause problems on the CUSL2 series.

P.S. - Tamarelle, I know that you are a long term contributor, I have been visiting this excellent site as a member since Sept 2000 myself.

carbon

The fact that you couldn't run 2000 would be a concern for me. I would be looking at that memory too...
Even tho' you have Crucial (which is very good) - your particular sticks may not match up well with this board.

You are aware that the Intel spec on this board is 4 sides of memory? I don't know how many sticks you are using - but it might be part of your problem.

It was mentioned already - try removing one of the sticks to see if it helps, or if you have a bud with a different stick you can try...

Tam was right about this board being very picky with memory. It seems to be the one thing that stands out.
