Win98SE is slow/hangs after upgrading to 512mb ram

Hi,

I'm new here. I've been an avid computer hobbyist for quite some time.

My machine has slowed down somewhat after adding 256mb Crucial PC133 SDRAM. Does anyone know anything about this?

I have set my vmem to 512mb, but don't think Windows uses it anymore because I have so much physical memory.

About to attempt dual boot win2k so imaging HD, partitioning, etc. Advice here would help too!

Which BIOS revision are you using?

Try the following:

1. Go into your BIOS and then go over to the Advanced menu.

2. Now go down to Chip Configuration and open it.

3. Make sure the SDRAM Capability says [PC133].

4. Make sure the SDRAM Operating Mode says [PC133].

5. Make sure the SDRAM Timing is set to [By SPD].

6. Make sure the SDRAM Cycle Time (Tras, Trc) is set to [7T, 9T].

7. Make sure the SDRAM Page Closing Policy is set to [All Banks].

8. Make sure the SDRAM Data Driving Mode is set to [Strong]. (This one is down at the bottom of the same page.)

Also you can change your Computers Role.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties then Performace and choose the File System tab. Then change your computers role from Desktop Computer to Network Server.

Can I upgrade or must I start from scratch?

I hate starting from scratch.

Also need to consider that I am operating a home-area-network.

Yes, you can upgrade. However, you are just asking for trouble by upgrading. Very few individuals have reported that the installation of a new OS over an old has been complete successful and gone without any pain.

Even if you are installing a new OS over an old one make sure you have a backup of all your data.

Since you will have a backup of all your data you can easily try the upgrade and see how it goes. If it doesn't go well then you can just start anew.
