windows xp rebooting

I have a new asus p4c800-e with kingston khx3200k2/1g hyper x ram. windows xp starts and reboots and then reboots until the machine is turned off. the problem goes away when only one memory module is installed it can be either stick in either channel but not 2 in dual channel mode. any thoughts.

thanks

Are you overclocking? Try a search and determine the recommended memory for your motherboard. You may also have a problem with two sticks that do not "match" each other--sticks that work fine alone, but not together.

Perhaps start by disabling the 'Automatically Reboot' in System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery.

This way you'll the a BSOD instead - the error message may give you some clues.

Bummer. OK, one other thing to consider (besides the possibility that this memory does not get along with the P4C800 that well) is that you may be having power supply problems. PSU problems are often a cause of random reboots. What you are experiencing is not the typical misbehavior for that problem, but it may turn out to be the culprit.

You are using slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 only right ? (i.e. not 1 and 2 or 3 and 4)

you could have a bad board. sounds to me that your memory voltage could be fluctuating on certain slots. is DIMM 3 the only slot youve tried? if so then try all others with only one stick.

also, i know this sounds n00bish, but make sure your heatsink is properly mounted. you could be experiencing heat issues.

Just because it's new does not mean that it is large enough or that it is working properly. The only true test would be to substitute a larger good quality unit (like an Antec TruePower 480) to make sure. If you have another power supply handy, it would not hurt to try it.

ok

The error message looks like this:

(The problem seems to be caused by the following file : ntfs.sys

Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area)

I get it every boot if both sticks are installed.

Also, are you running with Win XP SP1 and all the updates? Hotfixes apparently exist for this type of problem.
