Question Antec Easy USB device

Hi,

Has anyone tried using the new Antec Easy USB on the CUSL2?

"This device makes using USB peripherals easier. Easy USB allows you to utilize the front USB connectors on many new motherboards through a 5.25" drive bay. At the same time it acts as a drive conversion kit so you can mount a 3.5" device in the 5.25" drive bay. So in one product you get both a drive conversion kit and front USB interface ports in one."

In looking at the Pin outs. They have one 10 connector for the device and two 5 pin connectors for the mother board. (I can see where one would fit on the 5 pin connector for USB on the CUSL2 but not two?) I do not see how this would work on a CUSL2? Any ideas ? Antec states it will work on this board.

Did you install the extra USB's for the Cusl2, I don't remember how many connectors they have. I can't check, still on vacation far away from my comp.
I think there is one 10 pin and one or two 5 pin connectors.
Again I am not sure, but my CUSL2 came with 3 extra USB's and they all work fine. Just checked my Webpage with computer pics:
Its one 10 pin and two 5 pin connectors.

Lightbulb Antec Easy USB

Swannem:

Thanks for your reply! Especially since you are on vacation….

In looking at my board. I have two 10 pin connectors and one 5. (Pages 40 and 14 in the ASUS CSUL2 users manual. V1.02)

Maybe I should re-phrase:

I would like to connect the Antec Easy USB to the front USB 10 (or 9 if you do not count the missing pin) connector (USB47 in Manual)
The pin-out on the CUSL2 is as follows:

1 USB Power
2 USB4-
3 USB4+
4 GND
5 NC

6 USB Power
7 USB7-
8 USB7+
9 GND

From ANTEC:

USB CABLE CONNECTOR
The connector drawings and pin-outs below are examples of the 2 most
common found on motherboards currently. Please refer to your
motherboard's manual or your motherboard's manufacturer to be sure of
the pin-out for your USB connector.

Example 1:

1 USB Power 2 USB Power
(or VCC or +5V) (or VCC or +5V)
3 P - 4 P -
5 P + 6 P +
7 GND 8 GND
9 Empty 10 GND

*** In looking at this closely this appears to be a numbering difference in the Pin-Outs.
ASUS numbers the pins going down the row. (ie. Row one is pins 1-5 row 2 is pins 6-9.)
ANTEC goes across. (ie. Pins 1-2 are in row one pins 3-4 are in row 2. Etc. down to row five being pins 9-10. (Pin 10 not being there.)***

Here is the connector Pin-out from Antec that would plug into the CUSL2. The unit has two 5 pin connectors one for each USB Port.

Wire Color Code
RED POWER, VCC

WHITE P-, DATA-

GREEN P+, DATA+

BLACK GROUND GND

So, I believe it will work. Its just that I do not like using my board as a coffee warmer in case I make a mistake.

Update:

OK. I plugged it in with power going to pins 1 and 6 on the ASUS pin-out and it works fine!

Great news JD. Happy it worked out that way.
Those Hotel are great here in the Northwest, I've been in 4 different Hotels now and they all had a computer with a DSL connection for free usage.

The NW is great, but dang fires! Never expected such dry weather here but then again California got most of the rain and some of the NW's power.

Next week I will finally be going on vacation. Seaside Oregon where I have a beach house that I get to use for free.

Wink

Yes, the NW is very "internet friendly" with those hotels.

Free Beach House......... Some guys have all the luck...

Thanks again guys.

Remember, with the lack of power down south... "Save a Californian, turn off a light.."

PS I picked up my EASY USB at Fry's. They have em for 12.95.

Antec EasyUSB works fine on CUSL2-C

Hi all,

I posted this in another USB thread but wanted to confirm that this brilliant $15 device works great with the mobo and you get the "stolen slot" back to boot.

You just have to move three of the pins in one of the plugs down one. Just be very careful not to break the little plastic thingies that hold the pins in. Someone already gives the mind boggling list of pinouts above.

I just took the Asus manual page showing the pinouts and the Antec page from the site (not the one that comes with the device which is confusing). The Antec web page lists the wire colors at the end.

Just do it!

This device is still on my list of things to get.

At least I know it will work right out of the box.

Thanks.

Question Only 1 port working

I just installed the Antec Easy USB on my system, and
only the lower USB port works. No big deal,I just wanted
1 up front for the camera, but would like to know if anyone
has come across this problem.
I have the power leads on the correct pins.I also did not
do any modifacation on either of the 2 leads connecting
to the mobo.Looks like one lead had 4 wires and the other
5 wires.
I just want to make sure I don't fry anything.
Any help would appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Steve

Thumbs up USB 47

Mine are connected to usb 47 and both work fine. No changing of the wiring needed. 4pin to 4pin/5 to 5...I don't think you can go wrong. I have not used my cusl2 for some time but I didn't have any problem.
