That sounds counter-intuitive.

Please explain?

I'm waiting on the new OLED screens to come out as I heard that they are superior to LCD's in every way and are the only step up from CRT's...hopefully they will start mass producing them within the next year or so at good sizes and reasonable prices

Links?

And will the new OLED be 16 x 10 ?

my current video card might not be enough to match the native resolution of an LCD...so I'm either going to have to constantly upgrade my video card or play games at a non-native res...or my video card and LCD match up correctly but a game like Crysis won't let me play at 1920 x 1440 so I'm going to have to once again lower my native resolution...always some kind of weird compromise you have to make which does not exist with CRT's

If it's a 16:10 monitor it would be 1920x1200; 1920 x 1080 if it's 16:9. No such res as 1920 x 1440.

I'm not sure how you can compare a 26 inch LCD with a 21 inch CRT. Once you become used to a widescreen there's no going back. Plus the newer TN screens look pretty amazing.

And the GTX 260 is powerful enough to run at 1920 x 1200. Even for the foreseeable future.

I'm back again to update my latest LCD thoughts...I still don't believe LCD's are up to snuff compared to the very best CRT's but my CRT looks to be on its way out and I might have to bite the bullet and buy one...my CRT is flickering during power on and also has some faint burn in...the flickering worries me more as I think that's a sign that something might give soon

so after 'years' of research I've narrowed my LCD choices down to 2

-NEC LCD2490WUXi or the HP LP2475w...both are H-IPS panels with excellent color reproduction but I'm worried about the response time in fast moving games

that's why I hate LCD's...you can't have the best of both worlds...I want low response time AND excellent image quality...it seems like the H-IPS panels have excellent image quality but high response time/input lag...and if I go with the TN panels I will get low response times/input lag but average image quality with bad viewing angles to boot

Polonyc2, one of these days, you'll be coming back, right to this thread, extolling the virtues of your widescreen LCD and your newly discovered undying love for it

hey I'm picky...an LCD is a long term investment...

SupDawg, you'll be happy to know that the new Dell U2410 has made my short list...I've been hearing good things about it...first Dell LCD which I actually consider decent for gaming (maybe)...plus it's H-IPS as well

things an LCD must have for me: matte finish, low response time, low input lag and excellent image quality

people make too big of a deal about viewing angles...most of the time aren't you right in front of the screen?...or do people like using their computers at weird angles?

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

With only one monitor I'm right smack in front of it. I can see where having multiple monitors might lead to viewing at a small angle but even then it shouldn't be much.

Come one now, my monitor doubles a a TV tray aka one h e l l of an angle! Just kidding.

BTW I picked up a cheapo Acer x193w LCD and it works for me.
I will never forget my 10 plus year old NEC CRT, let the best rest in peace.

I was looking at Newegg's LCD Customer Choice Awards and most of them seem to be either Acer or ASUS...I'm sure those are decent enough but I'm looking for premium quality not just average or 'good enough'...most people with LCD's seem to be content with 'good enough'...I paid $1400 for my current Sony GDM-F520 CRT back in 2000 as it was considered the best of the best back then...I didn't mind paying a premium because of the quality and durability...going on 10 years I'm milking every last drop out of this CRT

I want my next monitor to be just as good so I'm willing to pay another premium...that's why I'm looking at the NEC LCD2490WUXi which is pretty much universally regarded as the best LCD...but I'm worried about the response rate of 6ms (GTG) and 18ms (normal)...is that even noticable when playing fast moving FPS games?

the new Dell U2410 seems to fall a step below the NEC but has been getting some good word of mouth...plus the price is much lower as well...tough call...this LCD technology really is crap when you can't get all the best features in one monitor
