you're right lol...I just checked my first post in this thread and saw that it was from 11/2007!...wow I've been procrastinating a long time with this ...but for me a monitor is a long term investment that should last me a good 8-10 years...I don't want to be upgrading my monitor every year...my video card/CPU etc are frequent upgrade items and I don't want my monitor to fall into that cycle...that's why I need to make sure that whatever LCD I choose is the right one for me and will last a long time

Again, it is setup dependent, so try it before you buy it. I ended up putting the 24" in my daughters room and I am using a 22" which works great for me.
I see how that could be an issue...but for me personally I think 24' is a good size...no way will I ever go for those 30'+ size screens for my computer monitor as those will fall into the situation you described where I will have to turn my head around to see the entire screen...oh and disregard that link to that LG LCD monitor, I have crossed that off my list lol...poor color reproduction + banding issues

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

I can't honestly think of anyone who didn't think an LCD was an upgrade over CRT. I can't believe you are being so picky about it. I think you are over analyzing things, but to each his own I guess.

Going from a cheap CRT to a better LCD I would agree. I still think a quality CRT looks better than any LCD I have seen. Besides CRT's have no lag, reproduce colors more accurately and can do true black. Anyone needing a monitor today will have to buy a LCD as no one makes a quality CRT.

Other thoughts: I hate the shinny screens many LCD's have. I also hate any monitor that has a shinny bezel around the screen. An LCD must have a charcoal or black colored bezel that is not shinny, accurate color, true black, ultra low response time, no input lag. If and when this happens I'll take one.

Amen!

my current CRT was/is one of the best CRT's ever made and that's why I'm so hesitant to give it up...the LCD owners who continue to defend LCD's at all cost over a quality CRT either have never owned a high end CRT or are just justifying their purchase

a high end CRT will ALWAYS be better then any LCD...period...there is no debate on that...maybe some of the super high end LCD's that cost $5000+ are better then a really good CRT, but those are few and far between

by the way there are still places that sell high end CRT's...the catch is that they are refurbished

EDIT: with my current 21' CRT I can play games at a resolution of 1920 x 1440...this is higher then pretty much all 24' LCD resolutions (1920 x 1200)...meaning my current CRT plays TRUE HD better then most LCD's do

I do believe that most people who defend LCD's over CRT's really have never owned a high end CRT...all they probably know about CRT's is their 'cheap' Viewsonic 17' CRT or some other low cost solution...that's why when they made the jump to LCD that they were so impressed

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

I had a High end Sony 19 inch Trintitron CRT and loved it, but I didn't like all the space it took up, I have 2x 24" lcd's in the same space, I can tell you once you have 2 monitors you'll wonder why I didn't have 2 forever!

Nope! You'll still be seeing 1920 x 1080 if you pump HD TV into it.

What happened to the other 360 horizontal rows of pixels you ask? They show up as 180 rows of black on the top and 180 rows of black on the bottom. Thus your widescreen 16 x 9 format of digital TV with the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

That's true, but we are talking about games here i think?

In games you can set every resolution you like. There a good big CRT might have some bonus.

Greetings

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

I wouldn't go larger than 22" for gaming, but for other kinds of work (programming*, CAD, Photoshop, etc) at 24" is nice. If you go with a 24" monitor - you'll need a pretty high end card (or SLI/X-Fire) to push the 1920x1200 pixels.

*Actually a pair of 20" 1600x1200 monitors would be great for programing.

I'd like an IPS panel with 10b color and 120Hz refresh (to cut down motion blur) - they have a pretty good response time. But, I think it will be some time before they become affordable.

I do miss my Sony G400 sometimes (absolutely beautiful monitor before it started to fuzz out), but the space saving, crystal clear text and power saving of the LDC are hard to beat.

crystal clear text? the my 1801FP did a great job at text. i have tried 2 new monitors this week since my 1801FP died last week, and in XP they are nothing but blurry. no idea what kind of panel the 1801 was as it was 5 years old.

i do have a S2209W coming this week, and it should be pretty good with the .24 dot pitch and 1920x1080 resolution. granted it is TN, but that is OK with me. i am using a S2009W now and it only looks good with W7 (don't have Vista)

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

Finally bought an LCD. Samsung 2253bw. It's got all kinds of cloudyness and backlight bleed on a pure black background (my TV doesn't have this, but then again I paid 10x as much for for that). Seriously though, it doesn't really matter. Games look awesome and my 8800 GT finally has some work to do.

My SyncMaster 226BW looks great, very little bleed and very sharp text. I think I just got a very good panel (no bad pixels, etc.). I am running Vista - so maybe that makes a diff.

Are you sure of the 1920 x 1080 ???

A 16:10 widescreen computer monitor is 1920x1200!!! Do the math. A HD or digital television monitor is 16:9 and thus 1920x1080. Don't mix up computer monitors with television monitors.
