Re: best gaming LCD monitor

Almost all screens here at aviation control are 4:3 now. Only the "main"-screens, where the air-situation-display (the radar picture) is shown are 1:1 (2048 x 2048 pixel).

So for the years to come everything 4:3 has to be adapted to 16:9 for example the layout of applications, number of apps, number of screens, console-bay (many screens are console mounted here).

Greetings

Dru

Yeah.

It's not progress.

It's the constant downgrading of what was.

I liked using webview in win2000 and win98se. I constantly used it. Then out came the downgraded XP operating system where there was no more webview in windows explorer.

looks like the time to buy a 16:10 LCD is now...otherwise in a few months or years they may longer be available anywhere...that sucks...I might bite the bullet and buy a nice 16:10 LCD and keep it in storage until my current CRT dies

Re: best gaming LCD monitor

Yep. My CRT (19" Mitsubishi) just gave up the ghost. A couple of the "better" monitors out there (including some of those mentioned in this thread) are 16:9, but after debating the issue with myself (a losing proposition ), I decided to go with 16:10. This one, in fact:
bit-tech.net | Hyundai W241D 24" widescreen monitor

PS: Strictly speaking, it is not a gaming monitor, although with a 6ms reported pixel response, it should be OK. I generally use my computer as an . . . um . . . computer , so color accuracy is more important to me. Anyway, I will report on it when I have a chance to evaluate it.

Hyundai?...you buying a car?

nice that you went with an SPVA panel instead of TN...I'm a stickler for accurate color reproduction as well

Thanks. I understand that five or so manufacturers make the screens for everyone, so I suspect that quite a few of us are running monitors that are the same "under the hood."

Regarding gaming, I noticed the following during a couple rounds of Counter-Strike: Source with the new monitor last night.

1. The colors are way better than my CRT. (Maybe not more accurate, but certainly better differentiated.) I used to have problems reading the T scores, since they are in red and they bled a little on my CRT. That is no longer a problem.
2. My video card cannot support all the goodies at 1920 x 1200. I had to turn off HDR completely (no bloom either) to get acceptable frame rates. (And the monitor got 130+ FPS on the HL2 stress test with HDR on.) I still have to get the frame rates up a little higher, since I got pwned a couple times that I am sure I can blame on lag.
3. I saw no ghosting, but some tearing, so I enabled vsync. Of course, the tearing could be a graphics card issue, not the monitor's fault.

I also spent perhaps 1/2 hour playing KotOR, and was able to play this older game without issue at the highest settings. Unfortunately, KotOR only supports a 4:3 aspect ratio, so all my characters "put on a few pounds." I tried running it in windowed mode, but the compromises were worse than the stretched image. Since I like playing older games, I suspect this problem will continue to arise. This is one of the reasons I was not that crazy about changing to a widescreen monitor.

Finally, I played Two Worlds for perhaps 15 minutes. It looked pretty, ran well, and supported all the same video settings I used back when I played the game. However, I can't remember much else, since I was getting tired.

Overall, I am very pleased . . . and now have an excuse to get a better video card.

1920 x 1200 native resolution on an 8600GT?...yes you definitely need to get a new video card to be able to play (newer games) at that resolution

just another reason why I would have a hard time giving up my CRT...no resolution 'limits'...if I can't play a game at a certain resolution on my CRT then I just lower the resolution without any worries

There should be a setting somewhere to fix that. It's not a problem.

I run an older computer on my HD2407WFP in 1024x768 and the monitor puts up black bars at the left and right. The firmware scaling routines do a fabulous job interpolating the 1024x768 to the 1600 wide by the 1200 tall pixels currently in use by the monitor. That means lots of good ol' games.

Another thing you can do is to go into the ini file of the game and manually set it to show a wider horizontal. See the website at widescreengaming for tips.

Funny that you mention HalfLife 2 in your post.

Last night, I just reset the resolution to 1920x1200 from my old resolution of 1680x1050 and WOW!!! I don't remember HL2 being so sharp and colorful!!! Maybe it's the new DeLL Ultrasharp; maybe its the new X3870X2 card; or maybe even the new X48 Rampage MB and XiFi soundcard ... but the sharpness and the colors and the textures were catching my eye ... and there were sounds I never heard before!!! I never heard the metalic CLANG before of the missile hatch when the headcrabs would exit the hatches of those headcrab missiles that would land nose first everywhere. I may have to redo the HalfLife 2 series now.

The reason you are noticing that the colors are far more gradient with higher contrast than a CRT is because of the technology. Whereas each CRT pixel can only be turned into one color and that's it ... each pixel of a LCD actually has three subpixels. The firmware writers on a good top quality monitor have learned how to turn on more than one subpixel when appropriate. So a good LCD panel is actually running way more pixels than a CRT for the same resolution. This is also why scaling from one resolution to another is much sharper and crisper these days. These days meaning only over the last year or two.

So ... better color gradient, better resolution, better contrast and 6ns reaction time ... and widecreen ------- get an LCD already poloneyc2!!!

Thanks for the tip. I looked, and it seems that option is only available if I use a VGA input. If I use DVI (my preference to maximize image quality), the screen resizing option becomes unavailable.

That is a good technical explanation for what I have been seeing. I appreciate it.

I just got the same monitor. It's arriving tomorrow. Can't wait. 2ms, 20,000:1 DC, all sound too good to be true. Have read and seen some stellar reviews of this product. Can't wait for my jaw to drop tomorrow afternoon.

How well has your monitor been serving you?
