Computer Turns off

Hi,

I have a Gigabyte board connected to the specs below, each time I save any settings in the BIOS the hole computer turns off for a few seconds and then comes back on again. Is this behaviour normal for this board??

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40Ghz L2 FSB 1066Mhz CPU, Gigabyte GA965P DQ6 Motherboard, Geil PC6400 800Mhz 4GB Dual Channel Ram, Seagate 250Gb SATA 11, Samsung 400GB SATA Hard Drives, BFG 8800GT OC DDR3 512Mb, Graphics Card, Creative Sound Blaster XI Gamer Sound Card, Samsung SH-203P/RSMN 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Light Scribe Disk Drive, Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 Operating System, Corsair 620W HX Series Modular PSU.
Scythe Mini Ninja Heatpip Cooler, Trust 5port USB Card.

Can you please advise,

Many thanks

Yes, normal expected behaviour after you power off the system and back on again or change settings in the BIOS.

um, YES. When you change BIOS settings OR when you power off the system and then restart it

It comes on, goes off... maybe once or twice before booting up

Re: Computer Turns off

Hi,

Sorry to keep going on, I have been e-mailing Gigabyte today with regards to this and they want me to send it the board back to them for testing. This is the last time I will ask is it normal after pressing F10 to save to CMOS the hole pc turns off including all the fans, lights and power, then a few seconds later it all comes back on again.

Regards,

wizkid

after saving any BIOS setting the computer will restart but not shut down completely

Re: Computer Turns off

This problem does not happen each time I change a setting in the BIOS but most of the time it does, as soon as I have pressed F10 to save to CMOS the screen goes blank and the pc turns off and everything goes off this happens straight after press yes to save changes, and about 4 seconds after the computer has lost all of its power and completely turned off, it comes back on again booting with the applied settings, the thing I cant work out is because its does not happen all the time and I am unsure weather there could be a fault on the board or not. I have tried all of Gigabytes suggestions and none of them have solved it, I have not got a definite answer to weather its normal or not, they have left now that I return the board back to them for inspection, I don't really want to do this because it would involve taking everything apart. I would be very grateful if you can offer any advice on the above.

if it doesn't happen every time then something is wrong...plus after calling Gigabyte they are also telling you to RMA the board...but as long as everything is working fine and you don't want to take apart your computer then just leave things alone...it's not affecting your day-to-day performance as you are not going to be changing BIOS settings on a regular basis so why worry about it

plus if the only thing that is wrong is that it is taking a few extra seconds to power off and re-boot then it is not a big deal...if it affects your day to day use/performance then try and fix it...if not then leave things alone

Ok I now its not a major problem but I have been on 5 different forums now and everyone but one is telling me that this problem is not normal. The only reason I want to make sure there is a fault or not with the board is because the warranty ends soon on this board. Do you think that its best to get it checked over? mind you Gigabyte are not 100% sure what the issue is at the moment even through I spend most of the day talking to them.

I would be grateful if you can offer any advice.

thanks,

wizkid

Re: Computer Turns off

If it's under warranty still, will they immediately send out a replacement if you choose to RMA it? If so, then I would RMA it and get the new one. But if they just wanna "inspect" it and leave you with no motherboard at all, then I wouldn't do so.

They said they would try and repair it first before replacing it.

see if they can do an Advanced RMA...which means they ship you a motherboard first and then you ship back your old motherboard anytime within a 1 month period

Re: Computer Turns off

Lots of newer mother boards shut completely off and then restart after you save and exit the bios if the change that was made could affect system stability such as an over clock attempt. My MSI P35 Neo2-FR does this and its by design. On my board if I raise the front side bus to anything over about 275 mhz it will start then shut down then start again on every boot aka double post. This is also done by design to check stability before booting to an OS. I have even seen mother boards that after any bios change and save shut down then start backup. I think it has something to do with the type of bios flash memory used. This is also by design.

I wonder if Gigabyte support knows what they are talking about. Do not RMA your board until you know for sure its a problem. I doubt anything is wrong.

Re: Computer Turns off

My P5B-D (P965) and GA-EP45-DS3L (P45) both do this. I believe they are working as designed (WAD) and I do not see this as a problem.
